FLORENCE T. STASZEWSKI

Mrs. Florence T. Staszewski, R.N., 98, of Carlyle Dr., Niskayuna, NY, formerly of Slater St., Amsterdam, NY, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2011, in the presence of God and her loving daughter, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY. She was born July 25, 1912 in Amsterdam, NY, a daughter of Joseph and Veronica Barylska Brisky (Brzycki). She was a graduate of Amsterdam High School and received her nursing degree from Syracuse University School of Nursing. She also completed course work in surgical specialties at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. She began her nursing career at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital. For many years, she was the nursing supervisor of the operating room at St. Mary's Hospital. She completed her career as a nurse in the emergency room at St. Mary's Hospital, retiring in 1978. She resided in Amsterdam, NY, for most of her life before moving to Niskayuna to her daughter and son-in-law's residence in 2006. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church in Amsterdam, NY. She was also a member of the Ladies Rosary Society. Her faith was a sustaining factor in her life. Her outside interests included polka dancing, playing cards, reading novels, and maintaining a keen interest in current events. She enjoyed spending the summer season at her lake house on the Sacandaga for over 50 years. She was married to William S. Staszewski on May 19, 1955. He died on October 3, 1997. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Joan and Clara Brisky, and Frances Kronk. She is survived by her daughter, Maureen Battiste and her husband, Christopher of Niskayuna, NY; her granddaughters, Lisa G. and Christina M. Battiste of Niskayuna, NY; her brother, Leonard Brisky of Liverpool, NY; nieces, nephews, and cousins. Florence's family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Syed, Dr. Ford, Dr. Giokas, and the caring nurses and staff of Ellis Hospital for their skilled and compassionate care shown to Florence and her family. The funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 28, 2011, at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., Amsterdam, NY, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church. Interment will follow at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the Rosary Society service at 4:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Church, 46 Cornell St., Amsterdam, NY 12010 or to the American Lung Association.
