John P. Herbert Clifton ParkJohn P. Herbert, 85, of Crescent Road, died on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany after a brief illness. He was born in Albany on March 19, 1927 and was educated in the one room school house on Moe and Crescent Roads. He was a decorated Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, having been honorably discharged in 1952. He had received the Combat Infantry Badge, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Distinguished Unit Emblem, the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars and the Bronze Star Medal. He retired after 32 years of service from the former Al Tech Specialty Steel Corp. in Watervliet as a millwright. Following retirement, John worked for the Northway Auto Exchange for about 15 years. He was a member of the Clifton Park/Halfmoon VFW Post 1498, The American Legion Mohawk, Post 1450, in Halfmoon, the Northeast Chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association and the 24th Infantry Division Association. John was a member of the Halfmoon Senior Citizens and had been a member of the American Legion Bowling league. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, and he had been the proprietor of the former Rioux Orchards on Riverview Road. He was a communicant of St. Edward the Confessor Church in Clifton Park and a member of their Knights of Columbus. He is the beloved husband of Rosemary A. Reilly Herbert, whom he married on Oct. 12, 1963; the devoted father of Karen (Michael) Socola of Clifton Park; cherished grandfather of Kaitlin and Connor Socola of Clifton Park; brother of Joan (John) Nerf of Albany and the late Paul, William and Robert Shanahan; brother-in-law of Barbara (Jim) Mitchell of Ballston Lake and James (Wilda) Reilly of North Carolina; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held Saturday morning at 9:15 from the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Rt. 9 in Clifton Park, thence to St. Edward the Confessor Church in Clifton Park where at 10 a.m. the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, kindly make donations to the Wounded Warrior Project 370 Seventh Ave., Suite 1802, New York, NY 10001 or to the . Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Waterford, New York.
