Dr. Jesse T. Henderson Jr. NiskayunaDr. Jesse T. Henderson Jr., 85, of Christian Court died at home Tuesday, April 2, 2013. Dr. Henderson was born in Russellville, KY, moving, with his family, to Amsterdam, NY in 1937. He graduated from Wilber H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam in 1944, graduated from Fisk University in 1949, graduated from Howard University School of Medicine in 1954, rotating internship at Albany Medical Hospital from 1954 to 1955. He became licensed to practice medicine in New York after completing the National Board exams in 1955. Dr. Henderson served as a captain and medical officer in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1957, residency in Internal Medicine at Ellis Hospital from 1957 to 1959. He began his private practice of medicine in August of 1959 in Schenectady. Dr. Henderson took postgraduate courses and passed the Board exam as a specialist in family practice and was elected as a Charter Fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Henderson practiced in Schenectady from 1959 until 1991 with admitting privileges at Ellis and St. Clare's Hospitals and county privileges at Sunnyview and Bellevue Hospitals. At the same time he worked for Schenectady County at Glendale Home, 10 years of that time was as medical director of Glendale Home, which had 500 beds at that time. Dr. Henderson was a member of the NMA, AMA, state and local chapters and AARP, he was active on boards and committees. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church since 1945, through the years he has been active on several committees and boards. He also belonged to the NAACP, 100 Black Men of Albany and Northeast Family and Child Board. Dr. Henderson enjoyed fishing, golf, coin collecting, genealogy, and he wrote his autobiography. Dr. Henderson met his wife, Mary Bussey Henderson, while they were classmates at Fisk University; they were married September 1, 1951, while Dr. Henderson was still in medical school. Dr. Henderson was predeceased by his daughter, Joann Henderson, she died in 2006. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jesse (Pamela ) Henderson III of Kahului, HI, and James (Greer) Henderson of Syracuse, NY; one sister, Susie Henderson Dudley of Silver Spring, MD; and one brother, Colonel Alfonzo Henderson, U.S. Army, retired, of Amsterdam; four grandchildren, Jesse IV, Amanda, Alexis and Isaiah Henderson. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service which will be conducted Saturday at 12 noon at the Friendship Baptist Church, 409 Union Street, Schenectady. Calling hours will be at church, preceding the service, from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. Burial will be in Vale Cemetery, Schenectady. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12308 or to the Banamon Baker Scholarship Fund C/O Friendship Baptist Church, 409 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12305.
