His early education was received in Fairview, PA, and Mohawk, NY, and his B.S. and M.S. were earned at the Crane School of Music at Potsdam State Teacher's College. Between high school and college, Don served four years in the U.S. Marine Corp. in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. Following college, where he was very active in Collegiate Singers and various jazz groups playing tenor sax, Don taught in the following school systems: Waddington, Mohawk, Boonville, Mohonasen and Scotia-Glenville. He then became one of the first staff members of the new Schenectady County Community College Music Department. Don is well remembered as private teacher of brass and woodwinds, having many students successful in the professional field. Don's professional playing career includes 23 years as bass-trombonist with the Albany Symphony and over 50 years of free lancing in the jazz world playing saxophone, keyboards and bass. An avid hunter and fisherman, he spent many weekends at Seventh Lake Mountain, hunting deer and ice-fishing with close buddy, Jim Fynmore. Many summers were spent salmon fishing in Alaska. Don was predeceased by his mother, Fern Smith Paulson; sister, Linda Paulson Watrous (Dallas, TX); and favorite aunt and uncle, Howard and Alice Harrah of Ohio. Surviving are his four children, Robin Paulson (Scotia), Jan Paulson and husband, Peter Gordon (Florida), Susan Glock (Warrensburg), and Scott Paulson and wife, Barbara Smith of Bethel, VT; and his exceptional granddaughter, Rebecca Glock of Columbus, OH. Also his first wife, Terry (Scotia); and second wife, Joann (Chestertown). Don's final wishes were to have his ashes scattered at Seventh Lake Mountain at the convenience of his children.
