Obituaries from the Past Week

FENNER, LOIS MAE - ELGIN
Lois Mae Fenner, 92, left us for the heavens, unexpectedly, Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Illinois from complications related to kidney failure. She lived her final days with her husband, Eugene Fenner, in their Elgin home with the same vigor and spice she always brought to life. Lois leaves behind her husband, Eugene "Gene" Fenner; children Nancy Oates, Bud Fenner, and Lorie Oranger (Lowell); grandchildren Kim Oates (Carmen), Jay Oates, Michael Oates (Sandy), Jennifer Hickman (David), Brett Fenner (Stefanie), Christopher Peterson (Kristin), Justin Peterson (Heather), and Kayla Oranger; and four wonderful great-grandchildren. She was greeted in heaven by her granddaughter, "Baby Girl" Oates; mother, Helen Walters; son-in-law, John Oates; and daughter-in-law, Linda Fenner. Born in Sterling, IL, on June 25, 1923, she was raised by her mother to be an independent and trustworthy woman. An only child, Lois spent her early years roller-skating at White Pines Roller Rink in Oregon, IL. After meeting her husband, they settled down in the Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin areas where she dedicated her life to being a homemaker raising and caring for their three beautiful children. Lois and Gene recently celebrated 75 years of love together. She loved to give back spending 30 years volunteering at Advocate Sherman Hospital. Working all kinds of volunteer jobs, from Hospital Greeter to Gift Shop Attendant to ER Assistant, she found a sense of joy and made it very clear to all of us that, "you have to give back!" What heart she had. She was always true to herself. Something we are all in awe of. She never compromised her values and shared her thoughts with conviction. In her words, "opinions are what makes the world go round." What strength she had. Her most fun-filled moments, second to spending time with her family, were on the golf course or in a bowling alley. She picked up those clubs and threw that bowling ball till her family would no longer accept all her "gimmes" on the course and those alleys seemed a bit too long and gutters a bit too wide. What spunk she had! We'll miss her. We'll miss her laughter and her lessons. We'll miss her smile and her hugs. We'll learn from her life and how we might be just a bit more like her in heart, strength, and spunk. Memorial Services will be held Saturday April 30 at 1:00 P.M. at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Visitation will be on Saturday from 12:00 NOON until the time of the services. ( www.lairdfamilyfuneralservices.com ). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church - Attn: Mortgage Fund (195 Nesler Rd, Elgin, IL 60124); St. Jude Children's Research Hospital - Attn: Tributes (P.O. 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148); Advocate Sherman Hospital - Attn: Volunteer Program (1425 N Randall Rd, Elgin, IL 60123).
