ARMSTRONG, CAROLYN - WHEATON
WHEATON - Carolyn Sue Armstrong, 72, of Wheaton, IL and Venice, FL, died at 10:30 AM, one day after her 72nd birthday on Saturday, December 20th, 2014 at her home in Venice. She was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Frances Norman and Judson Veren in 1942. She married Robert "Bob" Armstrong on September, 10th 1966 and he survives. Also surviving are her stepfather Kenny Madlin of Columbia, MO; two children, Scot Armstrong (Kerry) of Los Angeles, CA and Katie Armstrong (Jay) of Wheaton, IL; four grandchildren Lake, Shyla, Charlie and May; sister Virginia Crosby of Kansas City, MO; two nephews Bill and Todd and four nieces Chris, Teresa, Merritt and Mary Francis. Her father, mother and brother Darrell precede her in death. As does her nephew Jeff Crosby. Carolyn's father died before she was born and she was raised by her single mother, Francis, in Marshalltown, Iowa. She spent summers on their farm in Union Iowa, where she was inseparable from her sister Virginia and was often looked after by her Uncle Orville. At age 12 she moved and met lifelong friends and trouble-makers at Rock Island High School and spent years as a resident in Rock Island until a certain rugby team crashed a certain New Year's Eve party and a guy named Bob sat on her lap in 1965. They were married in Rock Island in 1966 and later moved to the Twin Cities of Minnesota 1968 and lived there until they moved to the suburbs of Chicago in 1971. In Lombard, IL she met a group of lifelong friends that called themselves the Butterfield Sportsman's Club. It was a fun and close-knit group of young parents that she remained close with for the rest of her life. In 1978 they moved twelve miles west, into a house on the most special of all cul-de-sacs: Gone Away Court. It turned out the house in Wheaton would become a special place, where she would love and raise her family, love her husband, neighbors and friends and could sit on the deck and listen to the children play at the elementary school across the creek. Across the street lived the Tyer family and Carolyn made a strong friendship with Lucille. She also became member of the Springfield Bunco Group, a group of great friends known for doing a lot more than just playing Bunco. Carolyn was known as a kind neighbor and was generously involved in all parts of the Wheaton community, most notably the Wheaton Drama Club, where she produced and stage-managed a wide variety of plays. She was also an active and contributing member of St. Matthew's United Church of Christ since 1979. She completed her associates degree from College of DuPage in 1984 and later took a position as the office manager for Dee Hicks Advertising in Wheaton, where she made close friendships and worked as the heart of the operation until she retired in 2001. In 2006, Carolyn and Bob bought a house in Venice, FL, and made fast friendships and strong bonds with many of the members of the Venetian Golf and River Club. It was a course she loved to play and even scored an 88 just last year. A quick wit, a cool lady, a kind and classy woman, she was a passionate fan of the craft fair, the flower garden, the casual cocktail and the spontaneous laugh. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Carolyn will be missed. The visitation is from 3pm until 6pm on Sunday, December 28th at Williams-Kampp Funeral Home in Wheaton, IL. The funeral service will be the following day at 10:30 AM on Monday, December 29th at St. Mathew's United Church of Christ. Followed by a lunch celebrating Carolyn at the Village Links of Glen Ellyn. Memorial contributions may be made to Wheaton Drama Club at http://www.wheatondrama.org/support-us/ or to Thumbuddy Special, P.O. Box 145, Downers Grove, IL 60515.
