BUSCAGLIA, JOSEPH MICHAEL - MORTON GROVE
Joseph Michael Buscaglia, Sr. Born: July 20, 1923, in Hammond, Louisiana, Died: January 24, 2015 in Hoffman Estates. Joseph Buscaglia, age 91, passed away on Saturday at Alden Nursing Home. Joe was born to Angelo and Angeline (remarried Beranich) Buscaglia. Joe is most remembered as a loving husband to Joan and father to Marie, Joe and Kathy. As a son of a single mother during the Great Depression, Joe took on lots of responsibility at a young age and spent his growing up years in Louisiana, Indiana and Chicago. A veteran, Joe was proud to serve his country during WWII and the Korean War. He was a 2nd Lt. of the Army Air Corps and a navigator in a B29 crew. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross award, for serving bravely and with precision on dozens of missions in Japan. When he spoke about the war, it was with fondness and respect for the men Joe served alongside. His Catholic faith and inner strength enabled him to serve well. He believed prayers offered up for him saved his life several times during the War. After both wars, Joe worked in the Chicago loop at Hudson Ross, where he met his wife Joan Sophie Slosarzyk, and retired as an electronics buyer at Wieboldt's Department Store. Joe and Joan were married in 1960 and moved to Morton Grove where they lived for nearly 30 years. He spent his retirement years in Crystal Lake. As a devoted father, Joe established daily, weekly and annual family time and he was first in line at any event for the kids. Joe was the life of the party and looked forward to holidays, family celebrations, business golf outings and gatherings. Joe was overjoyed when his grandchildren were born and had fresh energy being around them. As hard as it is to summarize one person's life, words that truly reflect Joe's character are loyal, loving and funny. Joe exhibited remarkable loyalty to his family, friends, country and employers. At the end of his life, with severe dementia, Joe was content, spoke positive words, was friendly and had a sense of humor. Joe is survived by his daughter Marie (Mark) Guthrie; his son Joseph Buscaglia, Jr., and his daughter Kathy (Rainer) Engelmann; his grandsons, Grant Guthrie, Cody and Austin Buscaglia, Damian and Ruben Engelmann and granddaughter, Nevaeh Engelmann; his brothers John (Lyn) and Robert (Sonia) Beranich and sister-in-law Barbara (Richard) McNabb. He will be deeply missed by those who love him. He was preceded in in death by his wife, Joan and his granddaughter Leah Guthrie. Visitation will be on Saturday, January 31, from 8:30 a.m. until prayers at 10:30 a.m. at Colonial-Wojciechowski Funeral Home, 8025 W. Golf Road, Niles. Mass will be celebrated at St. Isaac Jogues Church at 11:00 a.m. Interment St. Adalbert Cemetery, Niles. Information, 847-581-0536 or www.colonialfuneral.com .
