NELSON, MARGARET - Palatine  
PALATINE - Margaret Nelson was born February 28, 1918 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to Harry and Kate (nee Wolchuk) Franke. She died Sunday, June 28, 2015 at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. Margaret came to Chicago for a family visit as a young woman and met her future husband, Will Nelson. She never returned to Winnipeg and on September 10, 1938 they were married and enjoyed a loving 63 year marriage. Will preceded Marge in death in November of 2000. She is survived by her children, Robert Nelson and Janet (John) Marsala; her grandchildren, David (Kim) Marsala of Carpentersville and Leanne (Herb) Rodriguez of Palatine; great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Amanda, Michael and Gabrielle; great-great-grandchildren, Christina, Madisyn, Caden, Mikayla, Tristen and Kayleigh; and her brother, James Franke of Seattle, Washington. In addition to her parents and husband, Marge is preceded in death by her grandchildren, Steven Nelson and Christine Dehlin; her sister, Olive Hewitt; and by her daughter-in-law, Marianne Nelson. Visitation 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road (four blocks south of Palatine Road), Arlington Heights. ROUND LAKE BEACH - Elsie M. Schroeder, 69, passed away Sunday June 28, 2015. She was the beloved wife of Edward Schroeder, survived by her mother Agnes Poehler, her daughters Kathy Schroeder and Susan (Brian) Bako, her granddaughter Emma Bako, her sister Patricia (Jack) Fosdick, and her brother Tom Poehler. SODERSTROM, ALAN DAVID - GENEVA  
GENEVA - Alan David Soderstrom, died June 29, 2015 after a long courageous battle related to a respiratory illness. Born November 23, 1933 in Geneva, Illinois, he was a life-long resident of Geneva with family roots dating back to 1887. Al attended Geneva Community High School graduating in 1951. He attended Northern Illinois University and continued his education at Aurora College, where he graduated with his Bachelor's Degree in Biology. He married Jean Newell on June 16, 1956. Alan served in the United States Army from 1957 through 1958 where he and his wife were based in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He moved back to Geneva in 1958 to raise his family. He worked as a Kane County Sheriff's Police Officer for a short stint. He then began a long career with State Farm Insurance Company, as a Claims Adjuster, from which he retired in 1996. He was a member of the Illinois Police Association, a Republican Precinct Committeeman, member of the Loyal Order of Moose, member of the Turner's Club in Aurora and a member of the Better Breathers Club of Elgin. Alan enjoyed hosting many family gatherings in his home throughout the years. Fond memories include Sunday morning brunches in his home and cooking for church outings, where he brought his famous baked beans and spaghetti. He also enjoyed keeping in touch with his classmates, former neighbors, church members, and his many friends. Alan, known as "Grandpa Al", was a wonderful Grandfather and Father. He enjoyed spending time with each of his children and grandchildren. Surviving are his children, David (Dawn Miller) Soderstrom, Bill (Sally Vanthournout) Soderstrom, Melinda Maughan, Lisa (Bill) Thanepohn, and Brett (Ann-Marie Trotter) Soderstrom; his grandchildren, Johnathon, Josiah, Joshua, Kevin, Steven, Samuel, and Bryan (Katie Galloway) Soderstrom; Lindsay, Jacob, and Matthew Maughan; Nicholas and Benjamin Thanepohn; Great-Granddaughter Amelia Jean Soderstrom; his brothers, Ken (Bernice) Soderstrom and Rick (Bobbi) Soderstrom; his sister-in-laws Christine and June Soderstrom; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jean; his parents Leah (Butler) and Ernie Soderstrom; his sister Ruthann Bartholomew; his brothers Robert, Ernie Jr., and Paul Soderstrom; his grandson Jordan Soderstrom; and his nephews Eric Soderstrom and Jerry Bartholomew. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 2nd from 4:00pm - 8:00pm at Yurs Funeral Home, 1771 W. State St. (Route 38), Geneva, IL. Funeral Services will be begin at 10:00 am on Friday, July 3rd at New Covenant Bible Church, 4N780 Randall Road, St. Charles, IL. SULLIVAN, BARBARA S. - Wheaton  
Longtime Wheaton resident Barbara S. Sullivan, nee Stone 79, died Thursday, June 25. Barbara was a retired Tribune reporter, who spent more than 20 years covering everything from the arts to zoning laws for the paper, earning a Peter Lisogar Award for excellence in education reporting along the way. She was also an award-winning tennis and bridge player, a voracious reader and an inveterate traveler who spent time in Turkey, Greece, Italy, Nepal, Peru, Costa Rica, China, Mexico and France, often writing about her adventures for the Tribune. Barbara grew up in Georgia, earned a degree in journalism from Northwestern and went to work right after college as a reporter for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. She also wrote for local newspapers in Contra Costa County, California and Ridgewood New Jersey before moving to Wheaton in 1974 and landing at the Trib. She always insisted that her greatest achievement wasn't professional but personal: Raising her daughters Jennifer Helen (Rich) Cicciu, Catey Evelyn (Mike De Lonay) Sullivan and Susan Mary Sullivan. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Evelyn Stone, her paternal aunts Cleo and Janie Stone and her maternal aunts Alice May Pearson and Dede (Art) Donaldson. She is survived by her grandson Tommy Cicciu, her three daughters, her cousin David (Illa) Donaldson, as well as her sisters-in-law Joan Sullivan and Kathy Alimanestianu and an intensely loyal circle of book-loving, bridge-and-tennis playing friends. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. with a short service beginning at 6 p.m. at the Williams-Kampp Funeral Home, 430 E. Roosevelt Road (one block east of Naperville Road), Wheaton, IL. TORP, DOROTHEA A. - PARK RIDGE  
PARK RIDGE - Dorothea Alvina Thoms Torp died on Sunday, June 21st, at Avantara Nursing Home in Park Ridge. She was 98½ and still lived in the house her husband, Norman, built for her in 1956. Mrs. Torp was retired from Scott Foresman Publishers in the Accounting Department. She was born on November 26th, 1916 in Evanston to William and Alma Thoms. In 1948 she married Norman Torp who predeceased her in death in 1982, They had three children, William (Nancy) of Hammondsport, NY; Wayne of Park Ridge, and Ann Ericksen of Des Plaines. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Christian (Tanya) Torp, Esq. of Lexington, KY, and Leif Ericksen, MD of Syracuse, NY. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 5th at 11:00 am at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 260 N. Northwest Highway, Park Ridge. Memorials may be sent to WTTW, Public Television, 5400 N.
