ALLEN R. HARJU

Allen R. Harju of St. Charles Allen R. Harju, age 54, passed away Thursday, August 15, 2013 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was born May 5, 1959 in Minneapolis, MN, the son of Richard and Doris (Kvaale) Harju of St. Paul, MN. Allen met his bride Mary in 1980 while working at McKesson in Little Canada, MN. They married in 1981 while he was a student at the University of Minnesota, where he studied transportation logistics and received a degree in Business Administration. His career brought Mary and Allen many places across the US, including Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Wichita, Kansas. As they relocated for Allen's work, he and Mary grew their family. Allen's loving family includes five children; each of which was born in a different state. Al, as he was known to close friends, was known for a sinister sense of humor, a gift for Cajun cooking, and an extremely keen business mind. He was a lifelong learner; always reading articles and books on how to be better and more efficient which contributed to his great professional success. Every quote, article, and motivational piece was shared with his children to ensure these lessons were passed on to future generations. He looked to history as well, picking up old books: the older, the better. Al never minded climbing down the ladder to help with the dirty work of his employers. Allen was dedicated to developing his relationship with the Lord. He found it to be of the utmost importance to show his children that a strong relationship with the Lord is the key to life's happiness. He did this to ensure the Harju clan was together again in heaven. He never hesitated to say hello to anyone, sometimes to the dismay of his children. It was difficult to leave a restaurant without first becoming close friends with the entire staff. Al was always active; golfing, swimming, running, and playing with his multiple beloved dogs over the years. Many nights at the Harju household were spent playing board games and having long discussions, Al with a fine scotch in hand. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Kelley); children Russell (Lindsey) of Omaha, Kelley (Tyler) Bryan of Houston, Alanna of Denver, Tyler and Rachel both of St. Charles; his parents; sister Judy (Rick) Galliher of Virginia; brother Rob of Minneapolis; mother-in-law Evelyn Kelley of South Dakota; and many dear nieces, nephews and friends. Allen was preceded in death by his father-in-law Wayne Kelley. Funeral Services for Allen will be held Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at 11 am at First Baptist Church of Geneva 2300 South Street, Geneva, Pastor Bruce McEvoy, officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Geneva. Visitation will be held Monday, August 19 from 4-8 pm at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State St. (Route 38), Geneva.
