LAKE BARRINGTON - Elaine L. Detweiler, 92, formerly of Brooksville, FL and Arlington Heights, IL, passed away at home on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014. Elaine was a veteran of World War II
Nurses Corps, where she was awarded four medals and three Battle Stars. She frequently mentioned taking care of "her boys" at Anzio Beach. Upon returning from the war, she was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC, serving as captain in charge of the operating room. She met the love of her life, a strapping young medical student, John Detweiler. They were married shortly thereafter and had 63 wonderful years together. Three girls arrived in quick succession. The family settled in Arlington Heights and John began a long and successful medical practice. Elaine raised and cared for her family and in later years worked in John's office. Retiring to Florida in the early 1990s, they were content and happy until illness affected John. "Our mother always thought of others before herself. She never complained and provided loving and compassionate care to our father during his illness." Elaine loved her family, faith, her cats, orchids, birds and her close companion of the last four years, her dog, Lexi. "We know our Mother and Dad are together again which makes our loss bearable." She is survived by her daughters, Judith Kroll, Joan Detweiler and Jeanne (Micky) Glenn; grandchildren, Chloe (Michael) Ciaglia, Nicholas Glenn, Madeleine Kroll and Jennifer (Michael) Lund; and three great-grandchildren, Max and Katie Lund and Keats Ciaglia. Visitation Tuesday, 3 to 6 p.m. at Meadows Funeral Home, 3615 Kirchoff Road (½ block east of Route 53), Rolling Meadows. Funeral Wednesday, 9 a.m. from the funeral home to Our Lady of the Wayside Church, for Mass at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in Florida National Cemetery. For information, 847-253-0224.
