GENE F. GETZELMAN

Gene F. Getzelman of Hampshire Gene F. Getzelman, 83, passed away Saturday morning, April 6, 2013 at Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born November 4, 1929 in Elgin the son of Floyd and May (Holten) Getzelman. Gene attended Hampshire High School and then worked as a mechanic at several car dealers in Elgin. He retired from the Kane County Highway Department in 1994. Gene was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was a lifetime member of VFW Post #8043 of Hampshire. Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, Barbara (nee Moore) whom he married September 18, 1954 at the First United Methodist Church in Elgin: his daughter. Sue Lynn (Dave) Callahan; daughter in law, Gail Getzelman: grandchildren, Lee Allen Getzelman, Dustin Bicknese, Lucas, Amanda and David Jr. Callahan; and great grandchildren, Colten and Calli. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Terry Lee Getzelman on November 25, 2006; brothers, Don, Dave and Jim Getzelman; and his sister, Rita Mae Hoffmeister. The funeral service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, April 13, at the First United Methodist Church, 207 Grove Ave., Hampshire with Pastor Gavin Brandt officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Hampshire Center Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 PM Friday at the First United Methodist Church. Memorials may be directed to the Gene Getzelman Memorial Fund. Fredrick Funeral Home in Hampshire is in charge of arrangements. For information, call 847-683-2711.
