Helen Bally Helen Bally, 92, of Springfield, Ill., died at 1:43 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, at Memorial Hospital, Springfield. She was born Feb. 29, 1920, to Louis and Anna Bach Kovalik in Chicago. She had three sisters, Anne, June and Bernice, and two brothers, Lloyd and Gene, who preceded her in death. Shortly after graduating from Maine Township High School, Mrs. Bally and a girlfriend left Illinois and moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where they found employment. After Pearl Harbor, her family was concerned about her safety as there was fear of a west coast invasion and she returned to Des Plaines to work in the family business. In 1945, she married a returning soldier, Harvey F. Bally, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They were married 37 years until his death in 1982. Prior to moving to Springfield, Mrs. Bally, lived in Des Plaines for approximately 70 years. She worked for the Algonquin Grade School and Universal Oil Corporation-both in Des Plaines. She traveled extensively in later years, going to Europe, the Holy Land, and trips throughout the United States and Canada. After moving to Springfield, she especially enjoyed the bridge games and other activities with her friends at Hickory Glen. She lived a full life and will be greatly missed. Surviving are her one son, Harvey Bally; daughter-in-law, Patricia Bally (Maggio); and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 3:15 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at G.L. Hills Funeral Home, 745 Graceland Ave., Des Plaines. Memorial contributions may be made to Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation, 10 Rockefeller Plaza, Suite 1007, New York, NY 10020, an organization that provides scholarships to the children of the Marines killed in the line of duty.
