Martin Thorvald "Marty" Petersen, born April 8, 1920, Chicago, IL. Marty passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, February 13, 2014. He is preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Ella Petersen; his sister, Eleanor Petersen; his brother Howard Petersen; his daughter-in-law, Carol Petersen; and his great-grandson, Mark Nogowski. He is survived by his adoring wife, Marian Petersen; his daughter, Diane (Ruben Cardenas) Petersen; and sons, Lee (Beth) Petersen, Mark (Lorain) Petersen and Glen (Marcy) Petersen; along with 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Marty graduated from Schurz High School in Chicago, and went to work for Carnegie- Illinois Steel, where he met Marian. He joined the US Marine Corps
in 1941, and fought with The Forgotten Battalion in WWII. When he returned from overseas, he immediately married Marian, the love of his life, on May 16, 1945 in Blue Island, IL. They lived for a brief time, in Yorktown, Virginia while Marty finished his time in the service. Moving back to Chicago, they started their life, family and eventually a business, Norwood Steel, together. They enjoyed traveling, golf and bowling. Marty could spend hours listening to music or reading, and could often be heard whistling a favorite tune. He loved baseball - playing in the USMC and watching every Cubs game he could - "maybe next year" not many have said that 93 years in a row. Marty will be greatly missed and loved by his numerous friends and family. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, One Hope United in Lake Villa, or Community Youth Network Inc. in Grayslake would be appreciated. Service and burial will be private.
