Richard J. Fiedler, M.D. of Elgin Richard J. Fiedler, M.D., 77, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Sherman Hospital, Elgin, after a short battle with lung cancer. He was born July 18, 1935, in Chicago, the son of Richard N. and Sally "Elsie" Koenig Fiedler. He was a trusted and beloved physician of 40 years, devoted husband, father and friend to many. He enjoyed travel, fishing, gardening, reading and faithfully read the New England Journal of Medicine. He was a graduate of Fenwick High School, Oak Park and graduated in 1957 with a B.S. degree from Loyola University and was awarded his degree in medicine form Stritch School of Medicine, Loyola University. He interned at Los Angeles County Hospital and completed three years residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic. He completed a medical oncology fellowship at the National Cancer Institute through the University of Southern California. He brought oncology to the Fox Valley area and practiced internal medicine and oncology for over 40 years. He held numerous positions at both St. Joseph and Sherman Hospital, including president of the medical staff, Oncology Committee and Sherman Hospital Board of Directors. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a captain from 1966 to 1968 and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal. Surviving are his loving wife and best friend, Eleanor "Ellie;" his loving children, Susan Fiedler, Sharon (Dr. Timothy) Sanders, Dr. John (Dr. Cheryl Paradis) Fiedler and James (Kim) Fiedler; his loving stepchildren, Dr. Rebecca (Eric) Henry, Stacey Kirkland, Douglas (Jane) Kirkland and Matthew Kirkland; his cherished grandchildren, Christina Fiedler, Alyssa, Tim, Nicholas and Mikayla Sanders, J.T. and Nate Fiedler, Mark, Jaimie, Mary and Jackie Fiedler, Quinn and Tatum Hanks, Helen Henry, and Audrey and William Kirkland; his dear sister and brother, Nancy (Larry) Duffy and Thomas Fiedler; cousins, Ken (MaryAnn) Butzen and Bob (Jackie) Hesser; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan, 7, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, West Dundee. Burial will be private at Mount Hope Cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Jan. 6, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St. (Route 31), Elgin, and then on Monday, from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Loyola Stritch School of Medicine, Notre Dame University, Mayo Clinic and Sherman Hospital.
