Robert C.V. Hughes, Colonel USMC Ret., 85, a descendent of Lake County pioneer farmers, passed away peacefully October 15th, with his loving family present. He is survived by his wife Betty, their three children, Jeffrey of Glen Ellyn, Lynn of Naperville and Laurel of Fort Collins, CO, their spouses and four granddaughters. Born in Waukegan, to Myron and Esther Lamb Hughes. Robert (Bob) and Betty Lou Lusk were married at the Wauconda Federated Church in 1951. Commissioned a 2nd Lt. upon graduation from Beloit College
, Bob went on to significant staff assignments and commands as an artillery officer including CO of Marine Barracks, Trinidad, West Indies, as Admiral John S. McCain's Naval Gunfire officer during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and CO 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division in Viet Nam during the Tet offensive, in the battles of Hue City and Khe Sanh. Later he served as head of Weapons Branch, HQ Marine Corps, Washington, D.C. Before retiring in 1981 he served as Chief of Staff to future Marine Corps Commandant, Al Gray, at Marine Corps Development & Education Center, Quantico, VA. Bob often said he felt privileged to have served with the finest young men in our nation. The Hughes settled in Champaign, IL. where Bob became active in a number of organizations, among them Kiwanis, Marine Corps League, and SAR He enjoyed tennis, skiing, and was an avid outdoorsman, hunting with his German Shorthaired pointers by his side.
