SUSAN MAGILL SMITH

Susan Magill Smith Susan Magill Smith, ageless, died after a valiant encounter with cancer on Jan. 28, 2013, at her home, in Dubuque, Iowa. Susan was born on June 3 in Denver, Colo., to airline pioneer Robert H. Magill and Elizabeth Markel Magill, and is sister to R. Hugh Magill of Winnetka and Christine Magill Baldwin of Westwood, Mass. She is survived by her spouse, Peter, and her loving family. Her parents predeceased her. Susan was a graduate of St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. and the University of Minnesota. At the time of her death, along with her spouse, she served as vice president for enrollment management and university relations at the University of Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa. A private, family, graveside Celebration of her life: a life joyfully, lovingly, and generously lived, will be held in early summer in New Hampshire in the gorgeous White Mountains. Memorial gifts can be directed to the Holly Lynn James Memorial Nursing Scholarship at the University of Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa. Special thanks to colleagues and friends at the University of Dubuque, Luther College, and Earlham College for their many acts of kindness and strong support. We are grateful to the staff of Hospice of Dubuque, especially Angela, Melissa, and Tracey, for helping us navigate through strange waters. Special thanks to Dr. Mark Hermann of Dubuque Internal Medicine for being a model of what the practice of medicine was always intended to be: humane and patient-centered. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
