Walter Emil "Wally" Guenther of Lake Barrington Woods Walter Emil "Wally" Guenther, 90, died Dec. 3, 2012, at his home in Lake Barrington Woods. He was born May 3, 1922, in Niles Center, the son of the late Arthur W. and Anna W. (nee Roehl) Guenther. He moved to Lake Barrington Woods in October of 2006, after building and living in his home in Palatine for over 50 years. Wally retired from the Arlington Heights School District in 1984, after 20 years working as a custodian. He loved interacting with the children and teachers on a daily basis, often playing baseball with the children during recess or racing them in the schoolyard. Wally enjoyed the outdoors and farmed until the late 1960s, often taking his girls with him to play in the cornfields while he worked. During this time, he also was a night watchman at the Creamery Package Company in Arlington Heights for over 10 years. Wally enjoyed watching sports, especially his beloved Chicago Cubs, often agonizing over the day's results with his brothers. He also had a love of dancing. He could often be seen at the Blue Moon in Elgin or one of the VFW's swinging his partner, Florence. He was a lifelong member of St. John United Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 35 years, Genevieve Marilyn Guenther (nee Sherman) in March 1981; his companion of over 25 years, Florence Blaufuss Loomis in January 2008; and three brothers Irvin, Arthur (Lorraine) Raymond and sister, Helen Hetzke. Walter is survived by two daughters, Karin (Tom) Bergdahl of Erie, PA and Susan (Kirk) Bostrom of Los Altos, CA; three grandchildren, Kelsey, Brian and Claire Bostrom; three brothers, Robert (Vernette), Donald and Vernon (Jean) and two sisters, Dorothy Brockmann and Ruth Vogt; as well as many nieces and nephews. The family would like to especially thank his wonderful caregiver and friend, Bob Cusi and his wife, Monique, who cared for him since December of 2007. Visitation will be Friday, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Meadows Funeral Home, 3615 Kirchoff Road (½ block east of Route 53), Rolling Meadows. He will lie in state Saturday, from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m. at St. John United Church of Christ, 308 N. Evergreen Ave., Arlington Heights.
