William G. Mitchell a resident of Wheaton for 50+ years William G. Mitchell, 81, died peacefully on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, at home. He was born Feb. 8, 1931 in Chicago to William and Ruth Mitchell. Bill grew up on the south side of Chicago. He attended Illinois Wesleyan University and then graduated from the University of Oklahoma on a swimming scholarship. He then joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War. After his service, he went to the Northwestern University School of Law. In September of 1957, he married Mary Jo McAvoy. He started in the law department of Beatrice Foods, where he eventually became the chairman of the board. He went on to become the president of Centel Corp. In addition, he served on many boards including Sherwin Williams, the American Medical Association, Peoples Energy and Northern Trust Bank. He loved to golf and was an active member of Chicago Golf and Coral Ridge Golf Club in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He was a very charitable and outgoing person and had many good friends. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo; two sons, William H. (Susann) Mitchell of Fort Lauderdale and John Gilbert Mitchell of Wheaton; grandsons, Michael Edward Mitchell and Joseph Troiano; one brother, Gilbert (Shirley) Mitchell of Hinsdale; and his nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 21, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Wheaton Cemetery in Wheaton, IL. Memorial gifts may be directed to the .
