Obituary Condolences

Betty W. Cockrell of Rolling Meadows Our dear mother, Betty Wampach Cockrell, passed into God's hands on Oct. 8, 2012. She was born to Frank and Gretchen Wampach on Jan. 2, 1919, in Chicago, and was raised in her loving family with three younger brothers, Bob, Frank Jr. and Paul. She graduated from Immaculata High School and remained friends with several of her classmates. In 1942, Mom married Matthew L. Cockrell, her loving husband of 68 years. After their first date, she knew this man would be the love of her life. Their first years of marriage were separated by dad's World War II military duty in the Army's Horse Cavalry but they soon settled as one of the initial residents of Arlington Heights. Their life was rich in spirit and community where they began Cockrell Coffee Service in 1954. Mom worked beside dad as Vice President managing the commissary and food operations. With mom's guidance, Cockrell Food and Vending Services grew to be one of Illinois' leading vending services. Mom was insistent on quality and appearance of the food for both the vending machines and the catering food service. Her recipes and menu selections were entertaining and appealing. She carried this passion for food preparation and appearance to our family meals and holiday celebrations. Living on Euclid, mom attended St. James Parish where she actively supported church and school activities. She participated in many community functions in the Eastwood area of Arlington Heights and loved playing bridge with neighbors and friends. Mom continued many of these valued friendships throughout her life. Mom and dad moved to Rolling Meadows, where they continued their friendships and love of life and growth of family. Mom is survived by her three loving and grateful children, Liz Wilmes (Dick), Carol Pankros (Paul) and Matthew W. Cockrell (Barbara). She is also survived by her brother, Bob Wampach. Mom has seven wonderful grandchildren, Eric (Kathryn), Greg, Carin (Mark), Cathy (Ricky), Ann, Kevin and Maureen. She has five delightful great-grandchildren, Lucas, Adelaide, Lauren, Jack and Olivia. The grandchildren/great grandchildren were the spark of her day when they called and visited or she received one of their many pictures. Mom has always shared her joys and sorrows of life with us. We will remember her wonderful laughter, her smile, her joy every time she saw us - any time, anywhere, for any reason. Mom's family and friends and faith were the loves of her life. The family will be holding a private Memorial mass at St. James Catholic Church in Arlington Heights, IL and private burial service at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Aurora, IL. Your expression in remembrance of Mom's life would be appreciated by prayer or kind deed to a loved one in her honor. Also, contributions would be appreciated to either the Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care (carecenter.org) or to the Matt and Betty Cockrell Endowed Scholarship of the Harper College Educational Foundation (https://donate.harpercollege.edu) providing scholarships to students.
