Obituary Condolences

Carol Herwig Gillings a longtime Gurnee resident Carol Herwig Gillings passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Winchester House, Libertyville. She was born on Aug, 2, 1916, in Burnstad, North Dakota, to Carl and Bertha Herwig. The family moved to Lake Delton, Wisconsin, then eventually settled in Arlington, Wisconsin in 1926. Carol obtained a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1938. She taught in Reedsburg, Wisconsin; Proviso High School in Maywood, Illinois; and at Warren Township High School in Gurnee, Illinois where she taught typing, bookkeeping and shorthand. She married Gordon D. Gillings on June 29th, 1946. They lived and raised a family in Gurnee. She was a former member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Waukegan and a charter member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Gurnee where she was chairperson of the Altar Guild and a member of the Ladies Society. Her husband, Gordon, was mayor of Gurnee for 24 years and she supported his activities in the village. She was an avid bridge player and participated in several bridge groups in the Gurnee area for many years. She also loved gardening and arranging flowers. She is survived by two daughters, Lynn (Wayne) Harmon of Huntsville, AL and Cheryl (David) Ross of Gurnee, IL; five grandchildren, Laura Ross, Michael Ross, Amy Ross, Pamela Harmon, and Susan Harmon; as well as a Sister-in-Law, Joyce Herwig; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; and all of her siblings, Otto, Parker, Esther, Erma, Anita, and Stuart. The family also extends special thanks to the caring staff on the fourth floor at Winchester House, especially nurses Susan and Rebecca, for the loving care provided over the past several years. A memorial service will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church, in Gurnee, at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 19. Friends may visit at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be private. Memorials may be directed to Bethel Lutheran Church. For information, call 847-336-0127.
