Obituary Condolences

Doris Jean Chalfin formerly of Dundee Doris Jean Chalfin, 87, of Richmond, IL, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at the home of her daughter with her loving family at her side. Doris was born in Cridersville, Ohio on May 6, 1925, the third child of the late Walter and Wava (nee Henkle) Shaw. She was married to Richard W. Chalfin on May 31,1942, in Roundhead, Ohio, and recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. She grew up on a farm in Hardin County, Ohio and was educated in McGuffey schools. She moved to Dundee with her family in 1956. Jean and her husband owned and operated Valley Excavating of Northern Illinois for 32 years. She also worked for Dominick's for 31 years. After retiring in 1990, she and Richard moved to North Fort Myers, FL. Jean was a Christian woman who enjoyed tending her garden and flowers. She loved people and never met a stranger. Jean is survived by her husband of 70 years; a daughter, Constance Gradt of Richmond; two grandchildren, Michelle (Thomas) Meyers of Blythewood, SC and Sean (Melissa) Gradt of Lake Geneva, WI; two great-granddaughters, Rachelle Gradt of Kewanee, IL and Crystal (Dave) Pearson of Lake Villa, IL; two great-great-grandchildren, Cody and Rylie Pearson; a sister, Louella Hartman of Heath, Ohio; sister-in-law, Fay Chalfin of North Fort Myers; plus many nieces and nephews. She was preceded by a son, Timothy Chalfin; a granddaughter, Stephanie Gradt; son-in-law, Richard Gradt; brother, John Shaw; and brothers-in-law, Clyde Hartman and Leroy Chalfin. Memorial visitation will be from 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at Grace Lutheran Church, 6000 Broadway, Richmond, IL, until the memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday. Rev. Andy Tyrrell will officiate. Inurnment will be in Ada, Ohio, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Foundation of Northeastern Illinois, 405 Lake Zurich Road, Barrington, IL 60010.
