ERMA L. COOPER Obituary
Erma L. Cooper A memorial service celebrating the life of Erma L. Cooper (nee Larson) will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, at Meadows Christian Fellowship (formerly Meadows Baptist Church), 2401 Kirchoff Road, Rolling Meadows. Born Feb. 10, 1925, in Chicago, Erma "Um" went home to be with the Lord Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at Manor Care of Rolling Meadows. Um grew up in Chicago, graduating with honors from Parker High School. She also worked as a dental assistant for Dr. G. Heyboer in Chicago. At church camp in Muskegon, Mich., Um met her lifelong sweetheart, Dick Cooper. She wrote to him every day while he was serving in the Army during World War II. They were married in 1947 and blessed with five children. They enjoyed almost 60 years together before Dick's homegoing in 2006. In 1958, the Coopers moved from Chicago to Rolling Meadows to join their friends, Pastor Mike and June Green, in starting Meadows Baptist Church. Um loved God and served him faithfully through the church by cooking and serving meals, working in the Women's Ministry, and teaching children in the church child center. Being a mother and grandmother gave Um great joy. She cheered from the bleachers at countless softball games, always sharing her famous cookies. Um was also an expert knitter and a gifted poet. Although diagnosed with vascular dementia at age 72, Um continued to play Scrabble and do word search puzzles until a week before her death. She loved it when friends, family and complete strangers sat down to find a word with her. In February 2012, Um moved to Manor Care, where she spent her final days. She will be deeply missed by all. Her life verse from the Bible was Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path." Um is survived by daughter, Nancy (Jim) Glonke; sons, Donald, Richard Jr. and Ken (Jan) Cooper; grandchildren, Jim (Kerstynn) and Jenny Glonke, and Matt (Lauren) and Sarah (Matt) Cooper; sister, June Rowley; stepbrother, Clarence VanWolde; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dick; parents, Albert and Elizabeth Larson; stepfather, Jacob VanWolde; brother, Bert Larson; infant son, James; and many other family and friends. Memorial contributions may be made to Meadows Christian Fellowship for their Care and Concern Ministry. Arrangements by Meadows Funeral Home, Rolling Meadows, 847-253-0224.
