Obituary Condolences

Erna V. Koeppen of Wheeling Erna V. Koeppen (nee Koelper), 90, fell asleep in the arms of her Savior on July 10, 2012, surrounded by her most treasured possession in this life, three generations of her loving family. Erna was the beloved wife of the late Andrew Koeppen; loving mother of Gerald (Jane) Koeppen, Sharon (John) Lemke and Jane (Michael) Frey; dear grandma of Gregory Koeppen, Kelly (Pat) Dudle, Kevin (Laurie) Koeppen, Kristine (Kevin) Seifert, Andrea (Mark) Guthrie and Timothy Frey (Nikki Thompson); and great-grandma of Grace, Andrew and Carlyn Koeppen, Madison and Molly Dudle, and Kaitlyn and Kayla Seifert. Erna was a proud farm wife who worked side-by-side with her husband of 48 years, Andrew, and their family. She not only worked the fields at the Koeppen family farm in Wheeling, but she was the smiling face that greeted thousands of customers over the years at Koeppen's Vegetable Stand on Dundee Road. A true servant of Christ, throughout her life Erna was a loving caregiver to many in times of need and will long be remembered as the kindest and most caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be missed by every member of her family as her legacy of Christian love lives on through each of them. Erna was the fond sister of Robert (Nancy) Koelper and Ruth (the late Richard) O'Donnell; sister-in-law of Bernice, Valerie and Ruth Koelper, Esther and Anne Koeppen, MaryJane Hauswald and Orville Kruse; and beloved aunt of many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Mathilda Koelper; her son-in-law, Herbert "Skip" Grandt; her brothers, Rudolph (Loretta and Esther), Edward, Erwin (Mabel), Herman and Leonard Koelper; her sisters, Florence (Carl) Huber and Mae (Robert) Harting; and in-laws, Bernice and Willard Schuler, William and Alice Koeppen, Violet and Martin Schuett, Bernhardt, Robert and Howard Koeppen and Elaine Kruse. Erna was a devoted member of St. John Ev. Lutheran Church in Northbrook, where she attended grade school, was confirmed, married and raised her family. In her later years, she was a devoted member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mount Prospect. Visitation will be Thursday, July 12, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Kolssak Funeral Home, Ltd., 189 S. Milwaukee Ave. (two blocks south of Dundee Road), Wheeling. A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, July 13, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 100 S. School St., Mount Prospect, where she will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment to follow service at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
