Gerald F. Hawthorne of Wheaton The family of Gerald F. Hawthorne invites friends to visit with them from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at College Church, 332 E. Seminary Ave., Wheaton. A memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. Born Aug. 16, 1925, in Los Angeles, Calif., he passed away Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010, at his Wheaton home. Jerry was the co-founder of the Institute of Biblical Research, author of the Word Biblical Commentary "Philippians" and "The Presence and the Power," and joint editor of "The Dictionary of Paul and His Letters and Tradition and Interpretation in the New Testament." Jerry studied at BIOLA, Wheaton College '51, M.A. '54, and the University of Chicago, Ph.D. '69. Jerry retired from Wheaton College in 1995 as Professor Emeritus of New Testament Greek Studies after 42 years of service. He was the beloved husband of 55 years to Jane (nee Elliot); loving father of Stephen (Mary) Hawthorne, Lynn (Andrew Loizeaux) Hawthorne and James (Andrea) Hawthorne; beloved son of the late Evelyn and the late Robert Hawthorne; proud grandfather of Daniel (Heather), Anne Marie, Andrew, Blythe, Zoe, Jessica, Elliot, Robert, Brianna and Keegan; dear brother of Norman Hawthorne, Frances Palmieri, Fred Hawthorne, the late Eustace and the late Robert Hawthorne; and fond uncle, teacher, mentor, and friend of many. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials to honor Dr. Hawthorne be designated to the Class of 1959 Gerald F. and Jane E. Hawthorne Endowed Scholarship in Greek Studies.
