1921 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS - James F. Ulrich Sr., 92, 50-year resident of Arlington Heights, died peacefully December 25, 2013, at The Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights. Jim taught high school mathematics for 36 years, 29 of which were at Arlington High School, where he was mathematics department chairman for 22 years. He also authored secondary-level mathematics textbooks. Born November 5, 1921, in Maywood, Illinois, Jim graduated from Proviso East High School in 1939 and from Northern Illinois University in 1943. He earned a master's degree from the University of Chicago, and studied at Yale University as a John Hay Whitney fellow. A member of the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics for 55 years, Jim served in many capacities, including president. The ICTM honored Jim with its T.E. Rine Award and Distinguished Life Member designation. Jim was also a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics for 32 years and the School Science and Mathematics Association for 40 years. He also served in the Illinois Education Association, National Education Association, Central Association of Science and Mathematics Teachers, and Metropolitan Mathematics Club of Chicago. Jim served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the USS Lauderdale in the Pacific and on the USS Florence Nightingale in the Mediterranean. After 20 years in the Navy Reserves, Jim retired as a lieutenant commander. A gentleman and a scholar, Jim will be remembered for his kindness and curiosity, commitment to family and exercise, devotion to teaching, and his dry wit. In retirement years, he was an enthusiastic member of the Arlington and Mount Prospect Tennis Clubs and roller skating groups. He was active in the Northern Illinois Computer Society and the District 214 Retired Teachers Association. He is survived by Jean, his devoted wife of 65 years, children: Jane (Robert) Hoppe, Jim (Linda) Wolford-Ulrich, Judy (Jerome Woods) Carlsen, and Joan (John Markovic) Ulrich; and grandchildren: Jeremy (Julie) Carlsen, Jonathan Ulrich, Christine (Michael) Benson, and Bethany Ulrich; and step-granddaughter Erin Woods. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Sadie Ulrich, and his sister, Elvena Ulrich.
