James L. Ackley Jr. of Mundelein A funeral service for James L. Ackley Jr., 82, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at the Kristan Funeral Home P.C., 219 W. Maple Ave. (two blocks west of Route 45 on Route 176), Mundelein. Interment will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, Libertyville. Visitation is Friday, Dec. 28, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. He was born April 3, 1930, in Lake Geneva, WI, to James and Josephine Ackley, and died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Jim was a graduate of Libertyville High School, Lake Forest College, and Northern Illinois University. He was a veteran of the Korean War, a member of VFW Post #8741 of Libertyville, where he served as color guard for 57 years, and a member of the Mundelein American Legion Post #867. He was a retired educator having worked in Mundelein School District #75 as a science teacher and in River Trails School District #126 of Mount Prospect for 35 years as a teacher and principal. He was a lifelong member of the Libertyville United Methodist Church. Jim was an avid golfer and bowler. He was a member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame as a Friend of Basketball (1990), MHS Basketball Hall of Fame (2007), and received the Mike Rose Award from the Northern Officials' Association (2012). This month he was honored for his 50 years of service as the official scorekeeper for the Mundelein High School Boys Basketball team. Most recently, he won the nomination for Friends of Athletics from the Illinois Athletic Directors Association, at the Division and the District levels, with the award to be given May 2013. For 10 years, Jim served on the Mundelein Police and Fire Commission, and for 15 years he served on the River Trails Education Foundation. He is survived by his children, Scott (Robin) Ackley, Dawn (Richard) Robinson, Rebecca (Jon) Cooley and Kathleen Ackley; his grandchildren, Alex, Kelly and Sean Robinson, and Tim and Amanda Cooley; and his sisters, Nancy Bassick and Diane Schram. He was preceded in death by his brother, William; and his wife of 52 years, Shirley. Jim loved children and loved to see everyone smile.
