He will lie in state Friday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, 101 N. Spring St., Elgin. Interment will be in Lakewood Memorial Park. Joe was born Jan. 22, 1939, in Courtland, MN to Paul and Emma (nee Hoermann) Groth. In 1941 his family returned to the Elgin area. After the death of his mother, he was raised "by the only mother he knew," Goldie (nee Buchholz). He graduated from Elgin High School in 1957. He married Lucille Anderson on August 27, 1960 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Elgin. After serving in the U.S. Army, he worked at Munz TV and then Sotos TV, eventually becoming owners with his nephew Gary Groth until retirement in 2004. Joe was always involved with the community and strongly believed in giving back and was involved in several organizations from the American Legion, Elgin and South Elgin Little Leagues, Kiwanis but found his home with the South Elgin Lions where he served in various positions including President, Treasurer and Secretary. He also served Lions on the State and District 1J level. During his 22 years with the Lions, he received numerous honors and awards, including the Lions International Melvin Jones Fellow, Lions of Illinois Foundation Fellow and was one of the recipients of District 1J Lazansky Award it's first year. He was also member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Elgin. Joe got his love of fishing from his father but fine tuned his skills with the help from his nephew, Ken Groth. He finally realized his lifelong dream of owning a place in Wisconsin when he and Paul purchased their cabin in Trego, where he enjoyed reading and teaching his grand kids how to fish. Along with fishing, Joe's other love was cooking which he shared with Viktor. They spent many hours comparing recipes and watching cooking shows. Using the skills learned as an army cook, he planned many dinners for large events held at the South Elgin Lions. One of his proudest moments was in May of 2012 when he planned and served then International President Lion Wing-Kun Tam, who was visiting from Hong Kong and hosting a meeting at the Lions Club. Joe is survived by his daughter, Linda (Viktor) Scham of Elgin, IL; son, Paul Groth of South Elgin, IL; and grandchildren, Korrine (Scham) Newton of Manchester, TN, and Jakob and Kayla Scham, of Elgin, IL; great-grandchildren Sophie Scham, Alex Newton and Lucas Newton of Manchester, TN; a sister, Lucille (Leonard) Schubbe of Richmond, KY; brothers, Dennis (Darlene) Groth of Jacksonville, IL; Lester (Judy) Groth of Aurora, CO; brother-in-law, Warren (Caroline) of St. Matthews, SC; sister-in-law, Nancy (Tom) Warning of Aurora, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
