He married Lucille Anderson on August 27, 1960 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Elgin. After serving in the U.S. Army, he worked at Munz TV and then Sotos TV, eventually becoming owners with his nephew Gary Groth until retirement in 2004. Along with fishing, Joe's other love was cooking which he shared with Viktor. They spent many hours comparing recipes and watching cooking shows. Using the skills learned as an army cook, he planned many dinners for large events held at the South Elgin Lions.
