John Cowl Dodd of Sugar Grove John Cowl Dodd, 87, passed away Oct. 30, 2012, at The Tillers. He was born Sept. 22, 1925, in Bloomfield, New Jersey, the son of the late John A. and Adele (nee Heydt) Dodd. John graduated in 1943 from The Hill School in Pottstown, PA. He joined the U.S. Navy V-12 program in 1943 and was assigned to the Stephens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. John graduated in February of 1946 as an ensign and was assigned to the USS Denver and released to inactive duty in July of 1946. He then worked for two years for J.P. Stevens Co. in New York City. On June 18, 1949, he married Marion McDonald and moved to Aurora, IL. John worked for the Aurora Paperboard Company, a division of The Davey Company, for 43 years. In 1992 he retired from the company having served as president for nine years. He was an active member in the community, serving on the board of Merchants Bank, and was involved in numerous local charities and civic organizations. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Marion Dodd; three children, Shirley (Steve) Starzyk, Stephen (Margaret Raskopf) Dodd and Susan Dodd; son-in-law, Greg Forestal; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; as well as special friends, the Judd and Diane Jones family, the Janet (Jones) and Don Aschliman family, and the Joanne Jones family. John was preceded in death by his daughter, Joyce Ellen Forestal; granddaughter, Catherine Adele Dodd; brother, William A. Dodd; and sister, Marjorie Alger. The family will receive friends on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 10 a.m. until the celebration of life service at 12 noon at Wesley United Methodist Church, 14 N. May St., Aurora, IL 60506. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Wesley United Methodist Church or to the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley, 111 W. Downer Place, Aurora, IL 60506.
