BARRINGTON - Letha S. Stokes, better known as Lee, died on Oct. 2, 2015 at the age of 90 after being in hospice for slightly over three years with congestive heart failure. She was the beloved wife of Rembert R. Stokes "Rem" for 49 years, sister to Ruth Skeeters and Irene Erlin (nee Skeeters), and a close companion to family and friends. She was predeceased in death by her mother, Jessie Skeeters (nee Hawkins), her father Bryant Skeeters, and two sisters Anna Lee and Bonnie Heston. Born on Feb. 20, 1925, Lee was raised and schooled in Kewanee, Illinois, graduated from the University of Illinois and received a master's degree in Social Work from Indiana University. She held jobs after college in the textile, paint and pharmaceutical industries before becoming a social worker in the Indianapolis School System. After marriage in August 1966, she became involved in volunteer work, serving as president of the Community Services Council in Monmouth County, NJ, and subsequently serving on the board of the Broward Symphony Orchestra in Fort Lauderdale, FL. From 1985, she lived in Inverness, IL, for 25 years and participated in the Inverness Women's Club activities including gardening, book reviews, and philanthropy for scholarships. In 2012 Lee and Rem moved into The Garlands of Barrington. Lee was an avid reader, correspondent, bridge player, weather "junkie" and close confident of her sisters and extended family members. She became a Unitarian-Universalist after college and served each of the seven churches she belonged to in significant capacities. She was a giver, not a taker. But most, she will be remembered as a thoughtful, caring and gracious lady who loved deeply and genuinely those whose lives she touched. She was beloved by her mother-in-law as though she were a daughter. She will be long remembered. A Memorial Service will be held at the Countryside Unitarian-Universalist Church, 1025 N. Smith Road, in Palatine at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lee's name to the Countryside Unitarian-Universalist Church in Palatine or to a charity of your choice.

I remember Rem Stokes having a work party before Christmas in the mid 1970s at their home in the Holmdel, New Jersey area. Lee and Rem played the piano and the group sang songs. Lee was a wonderful soul and she loved Rem. I learned today that Rem passed on June 12, 2022. They are together again. RIP Lee Stokes .
