  Spencer J. Loomis Spencer J. Loomis, 90, passed away Saturday, April 21, 2012, at his home in Lake Zurich. He was the beloved husband of the late Amy Wooldridge; father of Peggy Loomis Spencer (Jeff) of Leander, Texas and Nancy Loomis Schroeder (Charles) of Ingleside, Ill.; grandfather of John Deneau of Evergreen, Colo., the late Evan Deneau of Evergreen, Colo., Aaron Deneau of Leander, Texas, Penny Pea Bosch of Lake Zurich, Ill. and Tracy Pea Martin (Timothy) of Grayslake, Ill.; great-grandfather of Tim, Nathan and Amberly Deneau, Joshua Deneau Spencer, Hunter and Isabella Bosch and Charlee Loomis Schroeder; son of the late LeRoy and Josephine Catlow Loomis; and brother of the late Marian Bauer Loomis and the late Calvin Loomis. Born Aug. 23, 1921, in Barrington, Ill., Spencer graduated from Ela Township High School 1939, Northern Illinois State Teacher's College 1943, inducted into the Army 1943, wounded in the Battle of the Bulge 1945, was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct, American Campaign, European-African-Middle Eastern with 3 Battle Stars, World War lI Victory, Expert Infantry and the Combat Infantry badge. He was honorably discharged Jan. 30, 1946, and on Feb. 9, 1946, married Amy Wooldridge in Oregon, Ill., received his master's degree from the University of Wisconsin, taught in Waunakee, Wis. for two years, in 1950 returned to his beloved Lake Zurich to teach history, geography and health at May Whitney 6th-7th-8th grades. In 1953, Spence began the Springfield trips for 8th graders. He coached football, basketball, track and softball, during the summers took students on field trips to museums and sporting events. In 1960, he became principal, 1964 took the family to Tripoli, Libya to be principal of the Oil Companies School for two years, returned to Lake Zurich to be principal of May Whilney and because of his love for teaching, stepped down from this post to again teach history and geography. In 1982, after 33 years of teaching, Spencer retired and continued his lifelong community service which included delivering Meals on Wheels to seniors, providing medical transportation for those in need, took the late night shift for PADS shelter, delivered flowers recycled from St. Peter to the elderly, delivered boxes of food to needy as well as holiday baskets of food, president of the Ela Historical Society, president of the Lions Club, repaired library and text books for the schools, president of Lake Zurich Property Owners Association, president of the West Lake Club, president of Whitney Shores Association, served on the Lake Zurich Bicentennial Committee, spearheaded Oral History Project and the Veteran's History Project, spoke at high school classes on World War II, as well as for other groups on local history, author of "A Pictorial History of Ela Township," "Lake Zurich Centennial - 100 Years of a Midwestern Village," "Tales of Company 1," "One Hundred Years in the Life of St. Peter," "History of Whitney Shores," and a story of Lake Zurich to be published posthumously. In 2002, he was awarded the Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award and in 2003 the Spencer Loomis Elementary School was dedicated. Visitation will be held at St. Peter United Church of Christ, Wednesday from 3 to 9 p.m. and services will be Thursday, at 11 a.m. also at the church. Interment will be in Lake Zurich Cemetery, with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be appreciated for the Ela Historical Society.
