1923 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
Walter Henry McBride, Jr. May 1, 1923 - July 11, 2014. Walter Henry McBride, Jr. passed away July 11, 2014 at Research Belton Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola, who he was married to for 65 years, his father Walter Sr., his mother, Marjory, and his brother, Robert. He is survived by his sister, Patricia, and his children Sandy, Wally and Tom; also eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. Walter was born May 1, 1923 in Elgin, III. He served in the Navy during the Second World War on the LCS (L) 346 Ship #46, a support landing craft to protect troops and continued his service in the Naval Reserve until 1963. He retired a Lieutenant Commander. He was proud to serve his country. While anchored, a crew member's artillery gun went off and they were taking him to the ship's hospital to amputate his leg. Walt said, "No, you're not." He carried him to a land hospital where they saved his leg. His shipmate was forever grateful for his courageous act. He received his R.PH from the University of Chicago. He received his undergraduate degree from Carlton University while he was in the Navy. He owned McBride Pharmacy in Elgin, Illinois where he worked as a Pharmacist until the store was closed in 1964. His grandfather opened the store in 1919. He continued his career at Elgin West Pharmacy until his retirement. He and Viola moved to Sun City West and then to Foxwood Springs Brookdale Senior Living Center to be close to their daughter, Sandy. His favorite duty at Foxwood was being Santa Claus with his natural white beard. His memberships included: Navy Club, VFW, Sons of the American Revolution, the American Legion, Military Officers Association of America, National Association U.S.S. LCS (L) 1-130 and the Moose Lodge. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Memorial Services will be held at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin on July 21, 2014 from 12 noon until the time of services at 2:00 pm. The family requests no flowers.
