ELIZABETH HELMER Obituary
Elizabeth Helmer Elizabeth Helmer of Taunton, Mass. was born July 23, 1920, in Oak Park, to Hugh and Ethel (nee Cunningham) Phelan. She died Wednesday, May 4, 2011, in Taunton, of natural causes. Elizabeth met her husband, Clifford Helmer, in Illinois during World War II. He was a naval officer eventually stationed at Pearl Harbor. They were married in 1946, and had five children. Over the years they lived in Ohio, Illinois, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Mrs. Helmer was an active volunteer at the Catholic churches wherever they lived. She was chosen Volunteer of the Year at St. Edna Parish in the late 1990's. Mrs. Helmer is survived by her children, Richard (Pamela) Helmer of Short Hills, N.J., John Helmer of Willistion Park, N.Y., Mary (Edward) Gaudette of Raynham, Mass., Patricia (the late Christopher) Oles of Tarpon Springs, Fla. and Robert (Rachel) Helmer of California; her eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and her sister, Ethel Phelan of Glen Ellyn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Helmer, in 1981. Mrs. Helmer will lie in state Monday, May 9, from 9 a.m. until the time of Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Raymond Catholic Church, 301 S. Ioka (Lincoln & Elmhurst), Mount Prospect. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Compassionate Care Hospice, 183 Central Ave., Seekonk, MA 02771.
