Wilma Jean Basten Wilma Jean Basten (nee Jensen), 89, passed away at Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park on Friday, April 6, 2012, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Chicago to the late William and Ada (nee Stone) Jensen. In 1937, the family moved to Oak Park, where she grew up and graduated from Steinmetz High School in 1941. On Sept. 1, 1945, she married Erwin J. Basten at St. Priscilla's Rectory in Chicago. In 1946, the couple purchased a bungalow on the northwest side of Chicago, where all of their children grew up. Wilma loved traveling, gardening, and was also an avid reader. During her lifetime she read thousands of books and was involved in various book clubs. She also enjoyed walking; even up to seven miles a day until her illness prevented her from doing so. She enjoyed spending time with her family and especially loved holiday get-togethers. She is survived by her sons, Thomas (Arlene) of Richmond, Ill., Steven (Sue) of Cary, Ill., Scott (Anne) of McHenry and her daughter, Jean (Dave) Clark of Algonquin, Ill.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Edna May, who died in infancy; and her husband of 61 years, Erwin J. Basten. The family would like to thank Sue Basten for lovingly overseeing and ensuring that she received the best medical services available, and her two caregivers, Augie and Erica for all of their support, kindness and love they showed Wilma during her illness. A memorial will be held Sunday, April 15, at 10 a.m. at the Windridge Cemetery chapel in Cary, Ill. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to Helping Paws, 2500 Harding Lane, Woodstock, IL 60098 or the , P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123. Arrangements were made by Cremation Society of Illinois, 815-444-0740.
