I was in Germany when I heard of the passing of Lou from one of his seminary contemporaries. It came as a shock and made me very sad. I had seen Lou in May in Kalamazoo and he seemed there to be as full of energy and good humor as ever. But what to say about one man's life. I knew him a fine human being and a good friend. He and Marie had been very kind to me at the beginning of my career in publishing. I looked up to him as someone who combined considerable learning and shrewd commercial acumen. He taught me a lot, had me stay at the house in Oak Park, even took me to the Slovak social club, forgiving the fact that what I spoke there was very clearly Czech. I shall miss him sorely. My deep condolences go to Marie, Allan and further family. May light eternal shine upon him.

Dear Marie,
What a shock to read of Lou's death in the ACL announcements - so soon after joking with the two of you about the romantic anniversary outing he arranged to Las Vegas! We will miss his enthusiasm and his larger-than-life presence but we can't begin to fathom how much you will miss him. Please accept our deepest sympathy.

I'm so sorry for your loss, and regret missing Lou by only hours at Kalamazoo this past May. We go back to the late 50s, novitiate and juniorate with the SVDs, and I always found his company very stimulating -- especially when I disagreed with him. He had a lively mind and was a sincere seeker after the truth. May he find eternal peace. Jim Long

Dear Marie, Allan, and Paul,
Thank you for keeping us posted these last few weeks of Lou's life. It was heartening to hear of the care Lou was receiving and the wonderful presence of family and friends.
It is still hard to believe Lou is gone. Marie - I feel like you were just telling me at ACL about your lovely wedding anniversary night out. How special that you had that time together so recently.
As you know, it is hard to imagine anyone with a more exuberant and contagious love of classics than Lou. His enthusiasm was unmatched. His devotion to textbook publishing made the entire field richer. The number of people who have been posting messages online I hope gives you some sense of how wide Lou's reach was professionally. I don't think I've ever seen someone's passing mentioned on both the APA and the ACL websites. This is a tribute to the fact that the whole profession was in Lou's debt. It is so hard to imagine an exhibit area at APA or ACL without Lou busily talking to all the people he came to know in the profession!
It is a long time ago now that I first did some work for Bolchazy-Carducci through Lou's invitation. As author and editor, I have had a wonderful time. I so appreciate his having given me this opportunity.
I am so sorry for your loss, Marie, Allan, and Paul. Cherish the time you had together. If it is any consolation, realize how many of us are thinking of you at this time.

Dearest Marie and family--
I don't have the words. I did not know Lou was ill until very recently, and his loss is tremendous to the classics community and to his friends. I considered him my friend and seeing both of you at conferences was always my favorite highlight of day one. Oh, he will be terribly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Few can match Lou's service to Classics. We are all beholden to him for providing such a splendid variety of texts and materials to students and teachers at all levels.

So sorry to hear about Lou. He was always kind and encouraging -- and I am proud that he was able to write the Foreword to De Senectute. His contribution to the survival of the classics is a great thing, and his legacy will endure.

Oh, Marie!
I am so saddened by your lose of Lou. You were such a beautiful couple! I particularly enjoyed our time together at dinner as we shared our heart-felt sentiments. Amd although it's been years since we did so, I still cherich those moments. And I am sad that I'll never be able to experience such moments again.
As for Lou, he has long served as a model of academic excellence for me. I felt very priviledged just to know him, for he was a successfully giant scholar and human being who epitomized academic and societal achievements in publishing that are second to none. But I'm sure that you already know this.
Surely God will reward Lou immense bounty as a reward for his persistently good labors and intentions while he was on earth.
Clearly, Lou was a 'rara avis'. And for many years to come the fruits of his labors will continue to take flight.

Dear Marie, Allan, and Family,
All of us gathered for the NJCL Convention in Winston-Salem are shocked to hear of Lou's death. He seemed so well just a month ago in Las Vegas. We will all miss his enthusiasm and his warm smile, and we will think of him every time we open one of your books, which,for many of us, is every day. He has indeed exegit monumentum aere perennius.

Over a good many years, at the annual AIA meetings Lou and I would meet and chat in the exhibition hall, and I came to think of him as a friend and look forward to our meetings. His contribution to the preservation of classical learning in this country is noteworthy.

Dear Marie, Allan, and Family,
Only a few months ago at the American Philological Association's meeting in Philadelphia I said to a friend, "If anyone deserves the APA's award for service to the profession, Lou does." He did, and the textbooks that he provoked, published, and promoted will continue his legacy for years--but I will remember the sheer pleasure of talking with him, and the delightful challenge of trying to figure out where the conversation would go next. Lou and all of you, especially Marie, will be in my thoughts and prayers.
