Obituary Condolences

Earl Lucian Sheldon Earl Lucian Sheldon, 91, of Union Grove, Wis., passed through heavens gates on Oct. 6, 2012. He was born on June 11, 1921, in Oak Park, Ill. Earl was raised in Madison and attended UW-Madison. He served his country from 1943 until 1946, and was that of a Marine captain, Corsair pilot in the Pacific Theatre. Earl was a lifeguard at Shorewood Hills and Lake Mendota. He and brother, Robert, established a builder's hardware business, "Sheldon Hardware" in Chicago. Earl retired as an architectural engineer. He engineered the redesign and hardware for the main doors of the Vatican in Italy. Earl and former wife, Marion, raised their five children in Palatine, Ill. Earl became an integral member of American Legion Post No. 690 in Palatine, proudly serving as the financial accountant and bar manager in his retirement years. He was commissioned to major upon retirement. Earl was an avid golfer, tennis player, pool player, and skier. He was a six year resident at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in Union Grove. Earl is survived by his children, Karl Douglas Sheldon of Florida, Kay Volz of Florida, Kendy Varnum of California and Kristy Sheldon of Minnesota; grandchildren, Kevin Volz of Colorado and Tracy Volz of Florida; great-granddaughter, Gillian of Colorado; brother, Don Sheldon of Oregon; and many nieces and nephews; and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Beulah; his siblings, Lee, Robert, Ellis and Jean; and his daughter, Kerry. Funeral services will be held at Gunderson East Funeral Home, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, with Rev. Le Ann de Montes presiding. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park with military honors being conducted. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from noon until the time of service on Saturday.
