She was involved in chorus, plays and clubs in high school and was her senior class president. She attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, where she received a degree in home economics and met her future husband, Bob Struckman. She taught in high schools in New Berlin, Plainfield and Bensenville, IL, before the birth of her son David in 1948. Daughter, Donna followed in January of 1951, and Margaret settled in to the traditional 1950s role of a stay-at-home mom. When Donna entered high school and David entered college, she returned to teaching at Tefft Middle School in Streamwood, IL and continued there until she had accumulated 20 years as an educator.
