ANNELIESE ERNA SMETTAN Obituary
Anneliese Erna Smettan Anneliese Erna Smettan nee Falk, 86, of South Elgin, IL, passed peacefully away at her home, with her daughter by her side, on Thursday, February 21,2013, after a brief battle with lung cancer. Anneliese was born in Oberndorf, Germany on July 25,1926 to Minna Hartung Falk and Karl Falk. Anneliese loved the outdoors and gymnastics. She was a well known gymnast in her younger days. She loved the sport soccer, and it was at a game is where she met a professional soccer player named Rudolf Anton Smettan who won her heart. Anneliese was married to Rudolf Smettan on December 23, 1948. They moved from Germany to the United States in 1949. Anneliese worked as a home economist teacher, then worked for Singer Sewing in Elgin. Finally was the owner of Smettan's Bakery and Coffee Shop for 35years, where she made many good friends over the years. She often talked fondly of her regular customers as if they were family. Anneliese loved the outdoors, nature, flowers, and animals. It was said that she had a green thumb and could pick up a dead stick and make it grow again. She would spend hours upon hours in the flower garden, digging in the dirt. That was her true passion. She loved her garden and was so proud of it. The efforts of her labor were known by all who saw her beautiful work. Anneliese is survived by her daughter, Susanna (Susie) Smettan-Luther and her son in law David Luther of South Elgin, IL., her brother Karl-Heinz Falk and sister in law Wilma Falk of Solms, Germany; Her nephew Helmut Lommel of Solms Germany. And not to be forgotten her much loved furry "grandchildren," Brando, Cooper, Simba and Sabastian. Anneliese is preceded in death by her parents Minna and Karl Falk, a sister Hildi Lommel, sister in law Helga Lommel, neice Ursula Sohn all of Germany and her husband Rudy Smettan. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 27 at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin from 3:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. Burial will be private. A special thank you to all that helped in the comfort care for my mother, Provena Hospice of Elgin, Senior Services of Elgin, and Cherished Place in West Dundee. In lieu of flowers I know my mom would want everyone to be kind to one another and always say "I love you" to those who matter, because you never know how many breaths you have left in life. And in the spring please plant a flower in your garden for her. For information call 847-741-8800 or www.lairdfamilyfuneralservices.com.
