LEE C. GIBSON

1927 - 2013 | Obituary Condolences
Lee C. Gibson Lee C. Gibson, 85, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2013, at Tabor Hills in Naperville. He was born on June 6, 1927 in Staten Island, New York. Lee enlisted and served in the United States Navy in World War II aboard the USS Blue (DD-774), and was honorably discharged in 1954 after continued service in the Naval Reserve. He attended Hobart College in upstate New York and Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. He was a Sigma Chi and a three-sport athlete at Iona, including captain of the golf team, a frontline starter on the basketball team, and a member of the bowling team. He set the course record - 65 - in a college match at Bonnie Briar Country Club. His highlight as a bowler was a 298/764 series to spearhead a defeat of a strong Rutgers team. Lee married the former Anne Albert in 1954. They adopted their son, Bob, in 1958, and their daughter, Marilee, in 1961. Lee founded the Larchmont Little League with friends and served as its first President. He was employed his entire career as a sales rep and sales manager for MacGregor Sporting Goods Company. He won national sales awards in the golf division. His job allowed him to spend a great deal of time with the premier athletes and coaches of that era, including Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Joe Namath, Oscar Robertson, Willie Mays, and Bob Knight. At age 39, he was President and club champion at his golf club, Bonnie Briar. In 1971, he moved his family to the Cress Creek subdivision in Naperville and served as regional sales manager for MacGregor in the Midwest region. He served as President of the Cress Creek and Naperville YMCA swim teams, as well as the Board of Directors of Cress Creek Country Club. MacGregor offered Lee the national sales manager position, but he declined, as he did not want to relocate his family from Naperville to Albany, Georgia. Lee was a founding member of the St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Naperville. He was an extremely humble gentleman, with a simple Christian faith and a great love of family. He was a devoted husband to Anne and wonderful father, grandfather, and father in law. He relished attending and supporting his children and grandchildren in their various sporting events and other activities. He also loved Notre Dame, and avidly followed the Bulls, the Sox, and the Bears. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gladys Gibson, and his stepfather, Timothy Gibson. Surviving family include his wife of 58 years, Anne, his son, Judge Bob (Suzanne) Gibson, his daughter, Marilee (Richard) Siebers, and eight grandchildren, Kelly, Erin, Kyle and Jenny Gibson, Bobby, Candace, and Brandon Hill, and Catelyn Siebers. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 25, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville on Friday, April 26, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be thereafter at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery in Naperville. Memorials can be sent to Loaves and Fishes Community Pantry, 1871 High Grove Lane, Naperville, Illinois 60540. For information, 630-355-0213 or www.friedrichjones.com.
