BETTY JANE BUNGE

1925 - 2013 | Obituary Condolences
BETTY JANE BUNGE Obituary
Betty Jane Bunge Betty Jane Bunge nee Tappenbeck, from Wheaton, IL, 30 year resident of St. Petersburg, FL and recently of St. Charles, IL passed away in the early morning hours of August 8, 2013. In death as in life, she left us with quiet and dignity. She had a lovely morning with her husband before falling to a stroke. Betty was born in Chicago on Dec. 31, 1925 a blessed only child to her loving mother and father. She wore her hair in Shirley Temple curls, learned tap dancing, and wore bobby socks with saddle shoes as was the fashion of the time. She entered Lyons Township High School in 1942, enjoying glee club and horseback riding. Her high school years matched up with World War II and Betty actively wrote to servicemen away for that effort. By 1947, fresh from courses taken at the Lyons Junior College and night classes at the Gregg Secretarial School, Betty went to work for the Chicago Tribune where her father also worked, commuting from Wheaton where she lived on a farm with her parents. Betty met serviceman returned from the Pacific Theater, Norm Bunge, through introduction of friends in 1948, this is how things were done before internet dating, and a year later they married. Betty was a true Homemaker, an organization to which she belonged for many years. She raised four children to be responsible, moral, and happy adults, who in turn have raised families. Well done Betty! She did this as a stay at home mother: PTA, scout leader, bowling league, church service guilds in the era when house work was much more work. When the kids were in school, Betty returned to the secretarial work force at Water Quality Association in Wheaton where she made good friends among the 'women that work' set. The family traveled! Mostly vacations were had around 'the lakes', but forays were made to Florida over spring break, an area they grew to love. In 1980, Betty and Norm took a dream job and transferred to their beloved Florida where they lived happily for 30 years, recently returning to the Chicagoland area as health and less independence made them wish to be nearer to family. Betty's wish was granted as family were indeed at her side as she left behind her earthly life and joined her parents in heaven. Betty is survived by her husband of 64 years, Norman and adult children Norma Lyon of Wheaton, IL Joy Amann from the Cincinnati area, Patricia Bunge-Cwian of St. Charles, IL and son Steven Bunge of Yorkville, IL. There are 10 grandchildren all who have known their grandma, and 3 great grandchildren, 2 who have sat at her knee. Memorial Service will be held at noon on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at the Yurs Funeral Home, 1771 W. State St. (Route 38), Geneva. In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty's Honor may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church in Elgin.
