1925 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
LIBERTYVILLE - Gertrude D. "Trudy" Aten, 88, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013 at Lake Forest Place. She was born Nov. 11, 1925 in Oskaloosa, IA to Dr. Dell L. and Mrs. Jennie (nee McArthur) Grothaus, their only child and raised in the Doctor's office/home in Delta, IA. She graduated in Science and Home Economics and did graduate studies at the University of Iowa. She married John E. Aten, her childhood friend, in Delta, IA and moved with him to Libertyville in 1950, where they lived for 48 years before moving to Lake Forest Place in 1998. They were blessed with a son, John Dell Aten, daughter-in-law, Jane Elizabeth (nee Bolin) Aten, two grand-daughters, Kathleen Dell Aten, and Jennie Elizabeth Aten, all of Libertyville. Trudy loved the times spent with her family as they were very special to her. Gertrude was very active in her church homes. She grew up in the Disciples of Christ Church in Iowa. With her marriage to John, she became Presbyterian, where she was an ordained Elder in the Libertyville USA Presbyterian Church, very active in their Women's Association, Christian Education and established their archives. She became a founding member of the Hope Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Grayslake and also the Circle of Friends. She was a member of PEO, Chapter LL, of Libertyville, Town and Country Women, OES, a Volunteer and Life member of the Condell Hospital Auxiliary, a Charter member of AAUW, former member of the Libertyville Women's Club, a Cub Scout Den Mother and a 4-H Club Leader. Trudy was an avid gardener and lover of flowers and flower arrangements, antique collections and especially her collection of over 500 santas. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until time of services at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013 at the Burnett-Dane Funeral Home Ltd., 120 W. Park Ave. (Route 176, one block west of Milwaukee Ave.), Libertyville. Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Hope Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 32475 N.
