ELGIN - Douglas John Paulus, 66, of Elgin passed away on Thursday September 1, 2016 at St. Alexius Medical Center, Hoffman Estates, IL. He was born December 7, 1949 in Elgin the son of Frederick and Lorraine Paulus. Doug graduated from Utah State University with a degree in Sociology and Archeology. He worked at Valley View Correctional Center until retirement. His hobbies were taxidermy from a very young age and he was an Artist in Native American Bead work and Crafts. He belonged to the "Song of Hiawatha Indian Dancers" for many years. Doug volunteered at Lord's Park Museum, with his many talents and was instrumental in starting the "Native American Indian" display at the Gail Borden Library and then helped move and create it at the Elgin Historical Society. He is survived by his wife: Joanne; 2 daughters: Rebecca (Anthony) Kowalkowski and Keely (Omar) Mohammed; son: Jeremy (Jaime) Paulus; step daughters; Wendy (Ron) Ekena; 2 step sons: Scott and Randy Swain; granddaughter: Lily Kowalkowski; 8 step grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Gary Paulus; and a step son: Kevin Swain. Visitation will be held on Wednesday September 7, 2016 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM with family sharing at 6:30 PM at the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin.
