Ken Johnson Obituary

Ken Johnson beloved husband, father, friend went to be with the Lord Saturday, March 16, 2013. Ken is survived by wife Donna, daughter Jessica, son Wesley, sister Jill Woods (Doug) and his brother Ron Johnson (Brenda). He was preceded in death by his parents, James Ernest "Rip" and Sarah Jo. Among Ken's greatest accomplishments were his many friends. Too many to name individually, but they include his brothers and sisters at Trinity United Methodist, fraternity brothers at the University of Alabama, friends from the neighborhood, his golf buddies, his many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and business associates. Ken's love and kindness were not only related to those listed above. On a regular basis, Ken could be found ministering to members of the community. If a hammer or a chainsaw was needed, Ken could be counted on to help. He best exemplified James admonition: "to show me your faith by your works". Ken was born on November 23, 1957 in Anniston, Alabama. He grew up in Lincoln, Alabama where he attended Lincoln High School and was a star football, basketball and baseball player. Ken attended the University of Alabama from 1976-1980. It was here that he met the then Donna Clements, his loving wife of 30 years. He was in the pipe and steel business for 32 years and the people business for 55. In Ken's short 55 years, he touched the lives of many. Ken was a member of his church board, a leader among the Beta Theta Pi fraternity alumni, and a board member at Hoover Country Club. Ken was happiest when he was with his family, on the golf course, in a tree stand, standing over a grill, or in the Alabama football stadium. Ken was notorious for his "20 minute projects" that often involved do-it-yourself fixer uppers, inevitably lasting many times longer than anticipated. He was there at a moment's notice for any friend in need of anything from help with a dead car battery to organizing a meal for those suffering a loss. Ken was a wonderful husband, father, brother, and friend. He will be dearly missed by all that he knew. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Trinity United Methodist Church in Homewood, Alabama.

I would like to thank everyone for the outpouring support that my family has received since Uncle Ken's passing. We are truly blessed to have such great network of friends.

I was reading Steve Williams' post and would like to tell you that Honey was my first dog when I was a kid. We loved her dearly and was a great companion.

Again thank you for the kind words about Uncle Ken.

I worked as an Asst. Pro for a few years at HCC and eventually joined the club myself. Ken was very gracious to me on both sides of the fence and it was truly my pleasure to know him. I would bump into Ken on occasion at Alabama football games and it was always a great to see and speak with him. I was saddened to hear of his passing and my thoughts and prayers go out to Ken and all of his family and friends. ROLL TIDE KEN!!

Ken was one of the kindest and most welcoming individuals I've ever had the pleasure to know. We met as Beta pledge brothers years ago and he always impressed me with his positive attitude and desire to encourage others. I count myself as blessed to have known Ken . . .

I remember when I first met Ken over 30 years ago when we worked in the pipe business together. He was so eager and anxious to make it in the sales business. He never met a stranger and always left you with a smile. Although I went to "that school down the road", that never came between our friendship. He always made you feel at ease and comfortable. My family had a black lab that we could no longer keep, and he got his brother Ron to take it to the farm in Lincoln. I'm sure "Honey" had many fine years there. Ken got me out of that jam and the kids never forgot it either. We'll miss you my friend.

Ken sat at the breakfast table with several of us Saturday morning at HCC, telling jokes and jabbing others, talking about hunting, golf and guy stuff. He was in his element and just one thing we'll miss about Ken.
While Ken and I were not 'close' friends, I knew him well enough to know he had tremendous pride in his family and team, was a Godly Man and was an honorable and fierce competitor on the golf course. He will certainly be missed around HCC and I hope you know how well respected he is for his service and the way he represented your family.
