Eleanor Walters Collins, 96, of Sylacauga, died Sunday, April 27, in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, in the loving care of her daughter and son-in-law. A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, May 6, 11 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev.'s Jim Stanford, Ross Reddick and Hugh Kelso officiating. Visitation will be Monday, May 5, 5-7 p.m., at Curtis and Son Funeral Home, North Chapel. A native of Laurel, Mississippi, Mrs. Collins graduated from high school at the age of 16. She graduated from Jones County Junior College and Blue Mountain Bible College, both in Mississippi. Mrs. Collins moved to Sylacauga following her marriage to Clinton L. Collins Jr. in 1941, becoming an English teacher for the Sylacauga City School System during World War II
. In 1945, she resigned her teaching career, and became a full-time mother and homemaker. She was renowned for her culinary skills as a cook and baker. Mrs. Collins joined the First Presbyterian Church after moving to Sylacauga and faithfully taught the Couples Class in Sunday school for more than 21 years. She served as an officer in the Women of the Church, was a circle Bible Leader, choir member, narrator of many church pageants and was recipient of an honorary life membership in Presbyterian Women of the Presbyterian Church, (USA) in 1990. Mrs. Collins not only served her church faithfully, but also the City of Sylacauga. She was active in the American Red Cross, the Service League, Wise and Otherwise Study Club, and was a traveling member of Body Recall. For six years, she served on the Sylacauga City Board of Education. As a part of her 95th birthday celebration, she was presented proclamations from the Alabama State Senate, and from the office of Gov. Robert Bentley. Clint, her loving husband of 55 years, preceded Eleanor in death. She is survived by daughter Mary Faye Doyle (Kevin) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, son, Clinton L. Collins III (Julie) of Alpine AL; grandchildren, Collin Pearce (Matthew) of Tequesta, FL, Thomas Banks (Candace) of Westport, CT, Maura Mikals (Jonas) of Truckee, CA, Kristin Doyle of Arlington, TX, and Benjamin Collins of Auburn, AL; four great-grandchildren, Charles, Marin, Caroline, and Eleanor; sister, Charla Smith (Philip) of Hattiesburg, MS and brother-in-law, Robert Collins of Sylacauga. Pallbearers will be Thomas Banks, Benjamin Collins, Bobby Collins, Matthew Pearce, Jonas Mikals and David Thrash.
