LaVerne Kennedy, 89, died on March 13, 2014, in hospice care at Trinity Care, Birmingham, Alabama. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, noon at the Porter Family Cemetery in Munford, Alabama. LaVerne was born to Winford Hugh Sims and Miriam Sims on January 9, 1925 in Talladega, AL. She attended Auburn University, Columbia University, NY and ultimately obtained her Business Degree from the University of Montevallo in 1949. She worked as the Secretary to Head of Personnel for US Steel, and as a Social Worker for the Department of Public Welfare. LaVerne and Weaver Allen (married 1953-1965) moved to their first of many residences around Chicago, IL where all three of her children were born. They held very active social lives and were known for their Bridge playing and community fellowship. Following Weavers death she returned to Talladega and Vestavia Hills, AL before setting out for Orlando, FL in 1970 where she met and married John Kennedy (married 1974-1984). They led a very rewarding social, family, and church life together. They ultimately returned to Talladega to be close to family. She was politically active, and was named the Alternate Alabama State Delegate for the Republican Party. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Allen Baggett of Pell City, AL with two grandsons, Chris Knighton of Alabaster, AL, Jon Knighton and his wife ,Shea of Auburn, AL and their daughter, Mrs. Kennedy's great granddaughter, Harper Lane Knighton; two sons, Keith Allen of Chang Mai, Thailand with grandson, Nick Allen of Birmingham, AL and John Allen of Elkridge MD and wife, Sarah with granddaughters, Courtney Allen of Las Vegas, NV, Kathleen Allen of Athens, GA and grandsons, Zachary Allen and Matthew Allen both of Elkridge, MD. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lamar Weaver Allen in 1965 and husband, John Morgan Kennedy Sr. in 1984. In lieu of flowers, she requested donations be made in her name to
