Barbara Dowling Sweat passed away on June 10th. She was 87 years old. A long time resident of Talladega, Barbara is survived by her son Richard Merrell Sweat, Jr. of Montgomery, AL, daughter Glenn Sweat-Owings of New Orleans, LA, Glenn's husband Michael, grandchildren Silas, Merrell, and Avery, and brother Herndon Glenn Dowling. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews. Barbara's husband R. Merrell Sweat, brother Edward Camp Dowling, and son Graham Dowling Sweat predeceased her. Educated at the University of Alabama, Vanderbilt University, The Ringling School for the Arts and the Art Students' League (New York City), Barbara first settled in Talladega when her father was appointed President of the Alabama Institute of the Deaf and Blind. Subsequently she focused her talents on elementary education, and taught at AIDB. Barbara was a gifted and beloved teacher. Barbara was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church and for many years served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Fellowship Sunday School class. She also served as President of the Talladega Junior Welfare League. For many years she was a board member of the Heritage Hall Museum. A talented artist, Barbara was one of the original Sarah's Girls. She was a member of the Highland City Club for 36 years and a lynchpin of her Tuesday Ladies Group. Barbara was a delightful person and a bright spot in the life of everyone who knew her. Her passing leaves a gap in all of our lives. A private memorial service is planned. The family will receive friends and visitors from 5:30 to 7:00 PM on Friday, June 15th in the parlor of the First United Methodist Church.
