SYLACAUGA- Emily Goodwin Whitehurst (88) passed away with her children at her side on September 28, 2012 after a brief illness. She is survived by her daughter Emily Bearden (Theron); sons, Paul (Kitty), David (Ann), Mark (Ann), and Richard (Lynne); and grandchildren, Jonathan, Rachel, Adam, Stephen, J.T., Allen, Elliot, Tyler, Hunter, and great granddaughter Raina. Emily grew up in Trezevant, Tennessee where she was the high school valedictorian. She moved to Sylacauga after marrying and worked in the family owned construction and concrete businesses. Later she was the bookkeeper for Ash Jewelers in Birmingham for over 30 years before retiring to Alexander City. Among the things that brought great joy to her life were being with her children and grandchildren, cooking for her family, Christmas, reading, needlework, and watching the birds and squirrels in the morning on the porch at Lake Martin. Emily relished being around people and strove to maintain contact with the numerous friends she had everywhere. She loved all things Auburn. She was sweet, generous, and kind. She had a great sense of humor. She took pleasure in the simple things in life. To her children's spouses she was the best mother-in-law in the world. The family will welcome friends on Saturday, October 6 at 1:00 p.m. at Curtis and Sons Funeral Home, Sylacauga. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Promise Land Food Bank, c/o Shelby Phillips, 2789 Coosa Cty. Rd. 511, Goodwater, AL 35072.
