PENSACOLA, FL - Our beloved father, brother, and friend left us on July 17, 2013, after a long and fruitful life.
James, 82, was born in Gantts Quarry, Alabama, on March 1, 1931, to Joe and Ida Hendrix. He grew up in Gantts Quarry and Sylacauga, where he graduated from B.B. Comer High School. In 1950, he married Beatrice Price, also of Sylacauga. After his tour of duty in Korea, they moved to Pensacola, Florida, in 1954, where they raised two daughters and spent many happy years enjoying the beaches, waterskiing, and square dancing.
James took a job at Chemstrand, and retired from what became Monsanto after 31 years. His pleasant disposition and friendliness earned him the nickname Smiley, and that beautiful smile was still winning him friends and supporters until he passed this week. He participated in many of the recreational opportunities available at Monsanto including bowling leagues and golf.
James enjoyed all outside activities, and for many years planted a garden just like his father before him. Fresh tomatoes, okra, peas, and peanuts were staples of our summers. Beatrice loved flowers, and her green thumb rubbed off so that in later years he also maintained a beautiful flower garden.
He spent ten years in Milton, Florida, with his partner, Florence Dorsey, enjoying golf, square and ballroom dancing. The Dorsey clan kept him and Flo on the go as well, attending ballgames and golfing events.
James will be remembered for his love and commitment to his family, his easy smile, his hard work, and his willingness to lend a hand to anyone who needed help.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Hendrix; partner, Florence Dorsey; and sister and brother-in-law, Fannie Mae and WT Hudgins.
He is survived by his daughters, Wanda White and Cathy Hasselberger (Jim); granddaughter, Cassie Gilmore (Zac); two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Hannah Hall; sister and brother-in-law, Elsie and Alex Stewart; sister-in-law, Judy Dean (Terry); brother-in-law, Roger Price (Pat); and many nieces and nephews; adult children who came to his family later in life: Cliff (Linda), Tom (Gail), Curt (Shana), Bear (Kim) Dorsey and Phillip Cook and Cheryl Brooks and many grandchildren.
Our many thanks to the kind and caring staff at Home Instead, especially Jeanie, Anya and Andre, Baptist Manor, Baptist Hospital, especially 2E and 4E, Gulf Breeze Hospital, Broadview Assisted Living, and The Villas Assisted Living.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 22, 2013, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home South with Reverend Todd Dean officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Pensacola Memorial Gardens.
