Paxson, John M.* - Berwyn  
John M. Paxson, formerly of Berwyn John M. Paxson, 79 formerly of Berwyn died on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015 at Fair Acres Geriatric Center, after a long illness. John was born on Jan. 1, 1936 in West Chester to the late Edgar and Elizabeth Eachus Paxson. John attended the Thaddeus Stevens Trade School for two years and was a carpenter for most of his life at private schools, including The Shipley School and the Melmark Home. While at Melmark John was involved in multiple aspects both socially and operationally where he shared his compassion and commitment for children and adults with special needs. He was the Assistant Fire Chief of the West Whiteland Fire Company for 20 years and has been a Friend of Bill W. for 38 years. John was a long time member of Paoli Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday School. John loved his family and spoke proudly of his children and grandchildren. John is survived by his former wife, Jean D. Paxson of Malvern; son, Douglas J. Paxson (Marta) of Exton, and daughters, Diane Downs of LaGrange, Ky., Donna Richardson (Floyd) of Mooresville, Ind. and Jill Stafford (John) of Christiana, Pa. He leaves behind his brother Edgar Paxson (Mary Ann) of Providence, R.I.; as well as his beloved grandchildren Sarah Haider (Zain), Katie Gawryluk (Chris), Doug Paxson, Jesse Myers, Drew Myers, Rachel Stafford, and Amy Stafford. Relatives and friends are invited to attend John's interment on Monday, Feb. 2 at 10:30 a.m at Paoli Presbyterian Church's urn garden, 225 South Valley Road Paoli, PA 19301, followed by his life celebration service at 11 a.m. in Paoli Presbyterian Church's Chapel. Pilotti, Samuel J.* - Berwyn  
Samuel J. Pilotti of Berwyn Samuel J. Pilotti, 85, beloved hustand of Mary Ann (Monastero) of Berwyn, Pa. went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015. Born in Devon, Pa., the son of the late Domenic and Pasquette Pilotti, he attended Tredyffrin-Easttown High School, University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Finance and Penn State University. He joined AMP, Inc. and served in management positions for 17 years. In 1975 he converted his hobby of investing in real estate to a profession and founded Metric Realty in Paoli. He has continued to work for 40 years in all phases of real estate with his daughter, Lisa, and son, David. Sam often said, "Family to me is the most important part of my life, second only to being a Christian." He enjoyed spending time with his family and travelled throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe with them. Over 45,000 miles were travelled motor homing with his family over the years. Summer vacations were spent at the Pilotti home on Lake Wallenpaupac. During the winter they spent time at their home in Florida. He was also an avid gardner and grew enough tomatoes each year to share with family and friends. His gardens are filled with specimen trees and plants. He was a talentetd trumpet player and served in the Army Band during the Korean War. After the war, he took his own band on the road for a short time. After returning home, he played with several Philadelphia society orchestras. He performed with several well-known entertainers such as Peggy Lee, Sammy Davis Jr. and George Shearing. He also played for many studio shows, community charity events and school fundraisers. Sam was an active member of the community his entire life. He was an Easttown Township supervisor for 10 years, director of the Main Line Chamber of Commerce, President and Business Person of the Year of the Paoli Business Association, and a member of the Paoli-Malvern Lions Club for over 40 years receiving many awards. He was a former director of CII commercial realtors' organization. Sam was one of the founders of Meridian Bank and was director emeritus at the time of his death. He was a long time member of Chester Valley Golf Club. When his children were young, he served as President of the Beaumont Home and School Association and started and lead a student jazz band. He was an active member of Our Lady of the Assumption Church his entire life, serving as an altar boy, starting the music program in the 60's, serving as a lector for over 10 years, and also serving on the property committee. He recently became a member of St. Norbert's Church where he had hoped to continue his service. For over 20 years he was been an active member of Friendship Ministries. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Debbie Pilotti, Lorraine Masciangelo (Al), Sandy Gibbons (John), Lisa Campbell (Terry) and David Pilotti. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, a great-grandchild and brothers, Domenic and Gabe and a sister, Gloria. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation for 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30 at the Alleva Funeral Home, 1724 E. Lancaster Avenue, Paoli, Pa. On Saturday, Jan. 31, at 10 a.m. there will be a Mass of Christan Burial at St Norbert's Church, Paoli. Burial will be at St. Agnes Cemetery, South Rt. 100, West Chester, Pa. Memorial donations may be made to St. Norbert's Church, Paoli; Friendship Ministries, P.O. Box 55, Devon, Pa; or Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Strafford, Pa.

Popma, Charles T.* - West Brandywine  
Charles T. Popma, P.E., 94, of West Brandywine, passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2014 at Freedom Village. Born in Jackson, Michigan, Mr. Popma lived for 30 years in Villanova and for the past 17 years at Freedom Village at West Brandywine. He was a member of the 1938 class of St. Mary's High School in Jackson, MI. He spent his junior year vacation as a laborer on a New York Central Railroad track gang. He entered the Service in 1942 and served as a 1st Lieutenant in the 291st Field Artillery Observation Battalion. He was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement during the crossing of the Rhine River in Germany along with three battle stars during the European Campaign. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1947 and returned to the New York Central Railroad and was sent to the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration and graduated from its Advanced Management Course. He later became the Assistant Vice President of Engineering of the New York Central and Penn Central Railroads and retired as an Assistant Vice President of Conrail after 50 years of service. Charles and his wife Jeane loved to travel and visited all of the European countries and the capitals of South America as well as Eastern Asia. They loved sailing on the Chesapeake and enjoyed photography. In addition to his wife, Mr. Popma is survived by his nephews, Jeffery Popma, MD., Charles Lauer, Kurt Lauer and Mark Lauer and by his nieces, Ann Lauer and Valerie Wood. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at St. Peter Church, 2835 Manor Road, West Brandywine. Family and friends will be received from 10:15-10:45 a.m. Interment will be in All Souls Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Freedom Village Scholarship Program, 15 Freedom Blvd., West Brandywine, Pa 19320. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the James J. Powers, Elizabeth Jane Bertolette* - West Chester  
Elizabeth Jane Bertolette Powers of West Chester Elizabeth Jane Bertolette Powers, 93, of West Chester, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015. She was the widow of Robert Anderson Powers, Jr. Born in Trooper, she was the older daughter of Adrian Tesla Bertolette and Jane Crooks Bertolette. Betty was a 1938 graduate of Lansdale High School and a 1942 graduate of Penn State University with a BS in science, the School of Home Economics. After teaching in Cochranville and Liberty, Pa., Betty married Bob on Oct. 6, 1945, and began her long residency in West Chester. A 70 year member of the First Presbyterian Church of West Chester, she taught Sunday school and served as a deacon. Her volunteer activities included serving as a leader with the Girl Scouts of America, blood drive organizer with the Red Cross, and board member at the "Bring and Buy Shop". Betty enjoyed extensive traveling throughout all of North America and parts of Europe, as well as very frequent stays in Ocean City, N.J. Betty is survived by her four children, Susan Musar of Towson, Md., Ann Matthews of Newark, Del., James Powers of West Chester, and Richard Powers of Redondo Beach, Calif.; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband, Betty was predeceased by her sister, Ruth Werking. The family wishes to thank the staffs at The Friends Home in Kennett and Neighborhood Hospice for their gracious and loving care of Betty. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Founds Funeral Home, Inc., 229 South High Street, West Chester, 610-696-0134, where friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in Birmingham-Lafayette Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.
