Houston, Herbert Arnold* - Kennett Square
Herbert ‘Doc’ Houston of Kennett Square Herbert Arnold Houston of Crosslands Retirement Community in Kennett Square, passed into God’s light on Feb. 26, 2015. He was 92. Herbert was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on Dec. 14, 1922 to Wallace Boyd and Josephine (Hunt) Houston. He was nicknamed “Doc” after the doctor and family friend who delivered him, Dr. Herbert Arnold. After high school, Doc served for two years in WWII as an Air Force B-17 navigator and bombardier in Italy, earning a Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross for completing his tour of service. He then attended Penn State, earning bachelor’s degrees in liberal arts, business and science and went on to receive a Master’s degree from West Chester State Teachers College in biology and education. He became a junior and senior high school teacher of science and biology in the West Chester Area School District for 28 years, retiring in 1986. Doc met Nancy Hoskins when they were both working in the Boy Scout office in West Chester. They married in 1955 and happily raised their three sons, Tom, Andy and Mark. Doc taught his boys about birds, plants, insects, gardening, camping and hiking. He also lovingly supported and attended all of his sons’ hockey games and other activities. As choir members at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity in West Chester, he and his sons shared their love of music. He was an avid reader of history and nature and enjoyed photography. He set a strong example of giving to the community and instilled an appreciation of the beauty of God’s world to those around him. His wife Nancy died of heart disease in 1974. In 1975, Doc married Sarah Lee (Beard) Ough, a music teacher in Unionville and a fellow parishioner of Holy Trinity. Sarah Lee was a widow with three children, Larry, Sallie and Martha Ough. She and Doc shared a love of music, nature and public service. With six teenagers in one house, parental life was a whirlwind. The bathroom shower was well-used, frequently flooding the floor. Doc invented a creative shower curtain holder that kept water from leaking out of the shower. He and Sarah Lee named it the NoMorWetFloor, proudly had it patented, and marketed it themselves online and on QVC. Doc always enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and so looked forward to their visits, and they with him. He and Sarah Lee moved to Crosslands Retirement Community in 1998, where he volunteered in music programs, Crosslands Nature Conservancy and, of course, continued birding. Ornithology was one of Doc’s lifelong interests. As a teenager in Honeybrook Township, Doc’s father taught him how to identify and band birds. He became a federally licensed bird bander, worked on bird banding and bird house projects at Longwood Gardens, and established a project along Bennetts Run at Crosslands for the study of bird migration and population. Doc was a member of the West Chester Bird Club and the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association. He was a longtime member of the National Audubon Society and during the summers of 1969 and 1970 was director of the Audubon Camp in Maine. Doc was a kind, gentle and caring man loved by everyone whose life he touched. He leaves behind his dear wife, Sarah Lee; his sister, Nancy (Houston) O’Hara; his sons and their wives, Tom and Jeanne Houston of State College, Pa., Andy and Jennifer Houston of Seattle, Wash., Mark Houston and Suzann Speckman of Anchorage, Alaska; his stepchildren and their spouses, Larry and Susan Ough of Roswell, Ga., Sallie (Ough) and Jim Nangeroni of Doylestown, and Martha (Ough) and Robert Briggs of Andover, Mass.; and 14 wonderful grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Nancy (Hoskins) Houston; his parents Wallace Boyd and Josephine (Hunt) Houston; and his brothers Wallace “Bill” Houston, John Houston, and Bob Hunt. Memorial services will be on Saturday, March 14 at Crosslands Community, 1660 East Street Road, Kennett Square, at 2 p.m. and on Saturday, March 21 at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity, 212 South High Street, West Chester, PA at 1 p.m. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be sent to Alzheimer’s Association National Office, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
