Dempsey W. Jackson of West Chester Dempsey W. Jackson, 78, of West Chester, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012 at the Chester County Hospital in West Chester. Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Robert D. Jackson Sr. and the late Esther M. (Gray) Jackson. Dempsey's grandparents were the late William A. Jackson and the late Georganna Jackson of Front Royal, Va. and West Chester. Dempsey graduated in 1952 from West Chester Area Joint Senior High School, where he participated in basketball, football, and track. He joined the Navy and served his country with honor during the Korean conflict
. He achieved the rank of Quartermaster Second Class, dealing with navigation and visual communications. He served for four years aboard the U.S.S. Canisteo A099. Homeport was in Norfolk, Va. and his ship operated in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Caribbean seas. He achieved the rating as excellent as a Helmsman. As a young man he was a catcher in the Softball Fast Pitch League and the West Chester Adult League for over 15 years. He coached Little League Baseball for W.C. West Side where several of his teams won championships. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a lifetime member of the Fame Fire Company and also the First West Chester Fire Co. Dempsey was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #322 and a 32 degree in the Reading Lodge of Perfection. He retired in 1989 from the Chester County Tax Assessment Office where he was an assistant to the Chief Assessor. Dempsey was a member and served on The Board of Assessment and Appeals until recently. Dempsey was preceded in death by Robert D. Jackson, brother; Elizabeth J. Jackson, sister; Nancy J. Jackson, sister; Bertha Jackson; and Brinton Jackson; and a son Stephen W. Jackson. He is survived by his beloved wife Frances A. (Mood) Jackson, who he always told "It was a pleasure walking thru life with you!" They would have celebrated 55 years of marriage on November 23rd. In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by daughter, Patricia Jackson-Frisby and her husband Ernest Frisby of Asheville, N.C.; son Glenn and his wife Deborah of Coatesville; sister Dorothy of West Chester; and his beloved grandchildren Brandi and Scott of Coatesville, and their dog Buster; and many nieces and nephews.
