Gene F. Austin

Gene F. Austin of Downingtown Gene F. Austin, 73, of Downingtown, passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at his home. He was the beloved husband of Helen Capanna Austin, with whom he shared 53 years of marriage. Born in Elam, Pa. and raised in West Chester, he was the son of the late Phillip T. and Laura I. Bard Austin. Mr. Austin proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was formerly employed at Eachus Dairy for ten years. He then worked for Coca Cola in Coatesville as a warehouse manager, retiring in 2003 after 32 years of service. Gene played men's softball in West Chester for many years and was a lifetime member of 1st West Chester Fire Company. He was a member of The Coffee Cup's back table and St. Anthony's Lodge. He enjoyed all sports, going to the casino, and playing cards. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Michael (Carrie) of Kirkwood, and daughter, Sherry Artus (Lester) of Downingtown. He is also survived by his sister, Laura Jane Johnson of Tennessee; brothers, Phillip Austin of the Philippines and Donald Austin of Delaware; grandchildren, Tim Kempton (Carrie), Ken Kempton, Drew Austin (Amber), Christina Swisher (Andrew), Katie Artus; and great-grandchildren, Logan Kempton, Austin Kempton, Asher Kempton, Jace Swisher and Addison Artus. He is also survived by his pup, Winky. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 14th, at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, where family and friends may call from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Interment will be in Green Mount Cemetery, West Chester.
